1937 Delahaye 145 Chapron Coupe

The 1937 Delahaye 145 Chapron Coupe first began as a challenge that the French automaker decided to embark on. The company wanted to know if it could actually compete with and beat its Italian sports car rivals. Delahaye was one of the first automakers in the world to figure out that you can supercharge an engine. It managed to fit a 3.5-liter V6 engine into the 145 Chapron Coupe, making it one of the most powerful cars in the world at the time. Only two of these were ever made, and they were ready to race. Unfortunately, come World War II, plans were put on hold and the car never got its chance to compete against its Italian competitors.

That is wonderfully...swoopy! Makes me sad about the current state of car styling, which seems to be dominated by teenagers determined to mimic star wars characters.

Holy Moly, that is gorgeous.

I've never seen that before.

And it's a gorgeous color, too.

Very swoopy.

I've always liked the long hood, short rear deck design of many cars.

The steering wheel is on the wrong side, but I could live with that.

...This is a 1937 Delahaye 145 Franay Cabriolet

(V-12, 4 valve covers and triple carburetors)

Rather than an LS, I'd like to see a more studly V-12, and maybe a supercharger.

It's truly gorgeous.

One of the very few ragtops I'd consider owning.

LOL

thumbs downOverwrought and ostentatious. A baroque caricature lacking any stylistic restraint.

Translation: Inspired and amazingly beautiful design, but may not be appealing to those with pedestrian tastes.

There's no accounting for personal taste.

baroque
- mannerism characterized by ornate detail
- highly ornate and extravagant in style

rocco
- extravagantly or excessively ornate

mannerism
- ordinary gesture or expression that becomes abnormal through exaggeration or repetition
- excessive or self-conscious use of a distinctive style

THIS is beautiful; most of those above are too much (from the school of "If one swoopy line is good, 20 swoopy lines must be great".
