New Apple Watch (40mm SE) in da house

It arrived while I was working (from home) but I never saw the UPS truck. Thankfully I got the "It's been delivered" email so I looked on the stoop and there was the (way-too big) box that the guy was smart enough to have put in a big plastic bag since it was raining all day. Finally getting around to opening it up now.

It's been so damn long since I've bought a new Apple anything, I'd forgotten about the whole packaging and unboxing experience. In fact (and this is the truth), when I saw the box I was actually afraid enough that I might rip or damage something that I went to YouTube to look for an 'unboxing' video. Thankfully, I found one and am watching it before I proceed further. Guess I know what I'll be doing all evening.

----

And the first snag is that I have to update my iOS to 16. Grrr...that's another 20 minutes I have to wait.

Well, I wish it were only going to be 20 minutes. So far, I've restarted at least four five times because it gets stuck on 'Preparing Update" after supposedly successfully downloading it. Apparently it's not uncommon to be stuck at that point.

Watch L E A D E R!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE unboxing an Apple product.

Opening any other brand is just that— opening.

And with every Apple product short of iMacs and Mac Pros, waiting for the bottom of the box and its contents to sllloooooooowllly slide out of the top of the box is magical.

Unboxing a mini was a little faster because of the wait, but is was still an elegant decent.

I also like the origami aspect of the shipping containers for several products.

The shipping boxes that housed my MB and MBA and protected the retail box were works of art in themselves.

Apparently it's not uncommon to be stuck at that point.

That's happened to me a few times.

Sometimes waiting it out was enough, a couple times a restart or two was required.

Finally got it updated. Played around a bit before hitting the rack. Figured I'd charge it overnight only to discover I don't have a damn charging block to go with the new cable. Adapters on their way from Amazon.

Yeah, I ran into that with mine. It really sucks that they don’t charge $10 more and put the damn wall wart in the box.
If you can’t use the product without it, it really shouldn’t be shipped without it. Just my 2¢.

Quick Q, are the new watches compatible with the old cables?

It seems they are. The usb-c cable was implemented since the AW7, and it’s necessary for the fast charging feature

Yes, USB-C only for the puck is a surprise and a disappointment for a lot of people.

I think it was a set of AirPods that included both Type-A and USB-C to Lighting cables, not that it helps with charging the Watch.

I had a USB-C Anker charger, so that was ok for me.

But the S7 charged off of my previous pucks/cables, so that's OK, too.

It's really only the new, first time Watch buyer that may experience initial disappointment.

No charger in the box is a win-win for Apple and the environment, and in another year tops, it'll be a non-issue for the rest of us.

Well, until a new connector is The One, and we start all over again.

On the Upside, some of us won't be around to witness and endure that.

LOL.
