The lightning connector version for the iPhone is only $10 right now. If safe and reliable, seems like a good answer. Maybe with Venmo as a back up. And no exchange of large amounts of cash. The 3.5% fee would be worth it to me.

Sounds like a horrible idea. All they have to do is dispute the purchase with their CC provider after the purchase and you will be out the money if you don't have a way to prove they picked it up.

I have been using Square since it is in Beta. It works great.
You get a slightly better rate using the Reader. There is also a Bluetooth reader that does chip and Apple Pay.
They used to give you a credit back when you buy the reader.

I have used Square quite a bit and have only been burned once - and that was with an offline transaction that failed to go through when I got back into service. That was actually what drew me to Square was the ability to process transactions offline. I was selling a lot of merch at a music festival where there was very limited service.

I also used to do a lot with Square invoicing for website work, but I am trying to get out of that business. It's too complicated with new tax reporting requirements for Square, Venmo and others.

I still use Square only for selling stickers here and there for a ski blog I write...less than $100 a year. It's easy for me to prove a loss on those as my transactions barely cover postage.

Since Square is designed for in person transactions, it sounds like they don’t have the same proof of delivery requirements that PayPal does. But yes on the receipt. But, in brief reading, it sounds like you should only accept chip cards and make sure you process them with the chip.

I’d still rather take the cash, unless you’re talking several thousand+. But a few hundred to a few thousand, I’ll take cash.
