in search of: Best low-profile, full size (with keypad) Mac keyboard (wired or wireless)

The old model aluminum apple USB extended keyboard with chicklet keys was da bomb. Since I can no longer get those new, I had a Logitech MX Keys for Mac. Bought new in 2020, just started spazzing out on me after just under 2 years of use. It is a great keyboard that comes real close to the Apple USB keyboard. I thought a keyboard like this should last longer than 2 years. But alas, I need a replacement.

I could go with the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID with numeric keypad for $200. I'm sure it's nice, but $200? I could go with the same Logitech keyboard, which now costs $125, up from $100 from 2 years ago. Those are the two leading contenders I'm seeing.

My priorities:
-Must be brand new ( to satisfy my ick factor and to qualify for credit card extended warranty reimbursement for the cost of my original, now failed keyboard)
-Must have Mac keys. I know I can remap windows keys to Mac keys, but the difference is enough that it bothers me
-Must be low profile keys with low travel. None of these mechanical clackey keyboards.
-Wired or wireless is fine

Anything else really good out there that I'm not aware of?

I think you might be in the market for a Matias keyboard.

A worthy successor to Apple’s original WIRED aluminum keyboard.
If you’re looking to replace a (now discontinued) wired Apple aluminum keyboard, this is the one you want… The Matias Wired Aluminum Keyboard offers everything the original had, plus a little bit more.

They have other variations including a (keybpadless) wireless one.

I can't relate to this at all. My pound-the-keys fingers want the long travel keys and sturdy, (satisfyingly) clicky keyboards.

But I don't have to share my computer space with someone who would be annoyed by the noisy keys.

They do make "quiet" mechanical keyboards, which really aren't much (if any) louder than chicklet style. Matias also makes these in Mac format. Not saying it's for you, but just want to set the record straight!

If you can get over buying from Walmart (third-party seller, actually), you may like one of these for $19.99 with free shipping. I bought a very similar one 7 months ago and it's still going strong. In fact, because mine was only $12.99 I went and bought another once I received the first. They've gone up in price a bit, and I no longer see the exact one I bought, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy another of these if I needed a new keyboard.

And unless I'm mistaken, if you don't like it you can just return it to any Walmart store.

thanks, All.

wurm, it looks like that one is one of several similar designs available from MacAlly and others. Probably from the same factory.

Satechi also has wired and wireless versions of a Mac extended keyboard that look pretty good at slightly lower than Logitech pricing. I've had good experience with one of their other products.

There is also the older non Touch ID model of the extended magic keyboard that seems to be around $115 at the moment.

Lots of options. I do enough typing that I want to end up with something that works well for me. I tend to use things until they wear out, so paying a little more for something that will hopefully last longer is worth it to me. Unfortunately, price is not always a predictor of performance. If it were, I would happily spend $200+ for a great keyboard that would last me 5-10 years.

Have you contacted Logitech? Maybe they'll "throw you a bone". You don't ask, you don't get.

(lay it on thick; you've been a Logitech user for years and, in the past, their products have always been great performers etc, etc. The worst they can do is to thank you with regrets for their failed keyboard)

Matias

Satechi

I have two Satechi boards that I like pretty well. Slightly different model, though; I don’t think that model is available now.

I already started down that road to no avail.

My Logitech K811, bought in mid-2013 has been circling the drain and may go T/U any time now.

It's not a great keyboard, but I'd buy it again if Logitech still made it.

Third parties sell it for more than I'd ever pay.

I've settled on the Logi MX Keys as it ticks all the boxes, including USB-C charging and illuminated keys.

I thought about the MX mini as it's pretty much the same board except for the lack of a 10-key, but it's not available as a Mac keyboard in black.

So I'll order on Wednesday, $120 OTD, from B&H via PayBoo.

decided to go with another of the same - MX Keys for Mac. Logitech gave me a 10% off coupon to use at their store, which for me makes it just a shade under $114 shipped w/tax $107 and change (reordered after signing up for an receiving 15% off coupon from Logitech pop-up on their site).
