I have been eating less, walking more. I think I am getting in at least 2 miles a day on weekdays. I need to do more lifting.

For years we used my dad's old Royal Canadian Air Force fitness book from the 60's. Then we subscribed to Apple One a couple of weeks ago and now are using the Apple Fitness app, cast to the TV. it's way better. We started with the old guys exercises and have shifted to the regular ones, doing about 10 min per day. It's pretty cool seeing the activities appear on our Apple Watches.

16.4 miles last week, 6.7 miles so far this week, virtually all walking.

My total miles from 2011 until today is 4591. Most are walking at 3 MPH but a fair number of my early miles include jogging. My wife accompanied me on 99+% of those miles. I also have several thousand miles walking on my treadmill desktop. Over that time period I have gained about 20 pounds and my BMI is now up to 32.

Each doctor visit for the last 5 years has gotten worse. Another med. Pre-diabetes. Add in swing shifts and a rotten diet.

In November of 2020, I ended up in the hospital with complications from Covid. Came close to dying. That is not an exaggeration. I lost 24 lbs in 2 weeks.

But then as I felt better and returned to work, old habits started back up. I gained back that weight and then some. I was miserable. I looked terrible. Last winter I was the heaviest I’ve ever been.

This year I decided I better change my ways before there isn’t a next year. I’ve lost 37 lbs. and kept it off for 4 months. I really watch what I eat. No treatsies as my youngest daughter used to call them. Eating healthier. I feel so much better. I have a doctors appointment coming up and I am feeling anxious how my numbers have changed.

I have 40 lbs left to go to reach a realistic target for me. I will need to start an honest to goodness exercise program to reach that goal. I’ve got to find time to walk each week. Not always easy with 4 or 5 12 hour shifts. At work, I clock 15,000 to 18,000 steps a day.

I tell people in my case, food is a drug. I deal with a ton of stress. I put too much pressure on myself in regards to my job. I internalize it and then to bury it, I would eat. It’s a battle. Sorry for rambling on.

I sit on a man’s back, choking him and making
him carry me, and yet assure myself and others
that I am very sorry for him and wish to ease his
lot by all possible means — except by getting off
his back. - Leo Tolstoy, novelist and Philosopher

A lot of us walked that path. Good luck.
