BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) has new train cars that seat fewer people than the previous cars. They say this is what people want. They do seem to like them more. But it just means I'm standing during the entire trip to San Francisco and then all the way back to Oakland (or San Leandro). How is that good?

The worst part is if I do happen to snag a seat, invariably an elder or preggo gets on board and I stare at everybody sitting down to see which one of them will give up their seat.

It's ALWAYS me!!! &%#$* @$%^& We should have to take turns.

If my neighbors (the house with 9 cars) are making too much noise or doing something anti-social, I'm the only person that goes to talk to them. My other neighbors complain on social media but will never take action. The troublemakers think I'm the only person having a problem with them, which is the first thing that comes out of their mouths.

The last time I called the cops on the guy with the boomin system who refused to turn it down, they took him to jail. I didn't want that to happen. But why are you out here cuttin' up at 2:00 am blasting a sound system that could be used at a stadium with warrants you haven't addressed? I felt a little bad. But then I always do. I'm not trying to give people bad days.

Those people are gonna get their bad days with or without your help.

Doing the right thing often isn't easy...

Don’t.

Yes, it would be great if everyone on the team pulled in the same direction, but you have some that don’t want to be on a team, that being a team player is just anathema to them so that they will make others lives difficult when they are called out. Then you have another group that are nominally team players, but cannot stand up to the anarchist (not Antichrist but *he* may be there /s) in their midst. They are weak and they cave, and many times they don’t see themselves that way. That only leaves the strong, of which you are one. It’s you that makes the team work, and it’s you that makes the community fair and rational. It’s hard being you.

Just know that without the strong, it would be even suckier.

Looking around a BART car, I'll see people who could be looking out for each other, burying their heads in books, newspapers, or phones, most of them after glancing up, and burying their heads again.

But some look on, as if to say 'look at me, I'm sitting, you're not, too bad' as some elder or disabled person boards.

One can't really enforced manners and compassion on those who have none, but one can encourage those occupying the reserved seating to vacate.

To me, people aren't really conscious of what's going on around them. The routine of it all. Every time I've pointed out to a young seated guy someone that could use their seat, they've gotten up. I think people want to be kind. They're just either afraid or not paying attention.

I call bs.

This touches on a BIG thing that does my head in.

Screaming.

Women and kids are — and I’m not being hyperbolic here — constantly screaming in the vicinity of where I live. Even with kids, it can continue well past dark; 9pm or later.

The noise factor? Couldn’t care less. Been around on this dust ball long enough, I can filter out whatever needs filtering. But that’s the problem. I don’t want to turn a deaf ear to it. Obviously someone could be in trouble.

I peek and peer out the window. Have never seen anything yet (and may it stay that way). I listen like a junkyard dog to detect telltale signs — sounds of struggling, some ineffable distinction that says “fear” to your gut, utterances, anything beyond the scream(s) that might tip the scales towards action.

The frequency is such that I would be calling the cops every day, multiple times many days. Enough to likely border on being labeled a crank.

I’m lost on this one. Often I do call the cops. The cops get it done and do check it out. Never been contacted for a follow up. But those times I don’t call stay with me for awhile. What if?

Just another price of living in a big city? I have no idea.
