I haven't laughed so loud in a long time.

Italian cyclist Michael Guerra uses his knowledge of physics and aerodynamics to adopt a “plank” position and overtake his competitors.

Catching those pedals at the bottom of the hill tho....

Brought back memories of scarred shins from Rat Trap pedals in my childhood.

The look from the pace motorcyclist made that video. Then he tried to copy - LOL

Hilarious when he passes the pace guy. He may have gotten the idea from this guy, Rollie Free, in 1948 setting a record for motorcycycles on a Vincent. Bonneville Salt Flats. Can you imagine the road rash?

It seems like just coasting and leaning over the handlebars would be almost as effective.

Maybe I'm broken, but this thread is fascinating to me. I do not, IN THE LEAST LITTLE BIT, find the video funny. When the guy hopped into position, I thought it was very interesting. As I continued to watch, I continued to find it interesting, but it never occurred to me to giggle.

What's so funny?

Also I am not familiar with the rules and regulations of these types of races, I wonder if he broke any rules.

I think that they've since banned that move because it's so dangerous. The rider really has almost no control of the bike. He's just a passenger along for the ride.

One minor flaw in the road surface tweaks a tire and you're a meat crayon.

true, it's dangerous.

But I did watch the YouTube video posted later and the guy did more dangerous tricks.

Talk about salt in the wound.

I did find the double-take on the scooter guy amusing.

And it looks like he does more than 'try' to copy Guerra.

I didn't find the video funny or hilarious, but it was fascinating.

He didn't seem to accelerate by pedaling before he planked.

That he used improved aerodynamics to coast past guy actively pedaling, as though they were in some race, is astounding.

I disagree.

I'd say a practiced rider has more control than most people would expect.

Steering is no factor.

Braking could be a problem.

A mistake in changing positions or being bumped by another rider could be problematic.

True dat.

Not a chance.

That's what the over guys are doing, and where were they.

His trunk and legs would practically be a drag chute compared the the very narrow cross-section of his head and shoulders.

He should point his toes more.

LOL.

What if he did point his toes for the duration; would he get cramps?

I think the real danger is unskilled riders trying to gain that aero-edge.

As I remember from a college writing assignment, above 20MPH, wind drag is 80% of the resistance on a bicycle. Hence aero helmets and time trial bars to be as slippery as possible.

Recumbent bikes can be very fast too but I hear they don't climb as well.

Did you see when he had to use his shoes slow down the tire, so he could get back in the pedals?
It was a Fixie bike setup.

Judging by the link of this guy's antics I posted above, I'm comfortable saying this was NOT an actual race; it was staged for the OP linked video.

Interesting, yes. Fascinating, yes. But I was in (even more) pain as soon as he 'assumed the position'. Yikes.
