What's a good font inspection app?

Someone I work with used a font years ago. The creator of the font sold ownership to another company. So now there's a dispute on where the font from and who had ownership of it when they started using it.

I have the original font file. I imagine there's some meta data in it that mentions the creator and such. What's a good app to use to inspect it to see? I'm not seeing any details in Font Book.

Thanks!

Are you seeing these types of details on other fonts using Font Book?
If you are, then perhaps the font file you are inspecting does not have that particular meta data.

Using Font Book on Mac OX 11.3, I select a font name and click on the circled I symbol (for Info, I presume). An itemized list of the font's properties including Designer, Trademark, Copyright, and License appear.

Maybe try taking a copy of the file and opening it as a raw text file in Word? Back in the day I was able to ferret out info on mystery files that way.

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline
As of July 16, 2022, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is now available by simply dialing 988. The previous number, 1-800-273-8255, will remain active.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Aaaaaah. So I looked at an installed font, and it gives me an info icon I can click to get all the details. I didn't have the font installed. Once I installed it, I could see the info. Thanks!

Raw text just looks like: 0001 0000 0010 0100 0004 0000 4453 4947

It’s been yonks, but that sounds right. If memory serves, which it may or may not, once it as open, I did a search for pertinent text strings buried within the copious pages.

Neither here nor there now though. Glad to hear you got it cracked. big grin smiley

FYI: The copyright notice for a font will often appear in the Get Info window for it.

Interesting. Is it an old postscript font?

I can see info for every TT and OTF font on my Mac.

1. Select the font in Font Book
2. Command-i

You'll see an unbelievable amount of meta info on the selected font.

The built-in /usr/bin/strings program is built for this type of thing. It prints out ASCII strings found in a binary file. It is safe to use on the original file since it only reads the file with no attempt to write to it.

I take it back. It's there. But some of the other data I'm looking for is not. TT.

That only works if the font is installed. I've since installed it and that gets me what I want. I wrongly assumed that I just needed to open the font in Font Book and not have to install it.
