How to ensure guitar from craigslist is not stolen

It’s some kind of Rickenbacker for $500 so it will probably be snapped up. I got to thinking if I swooped in an got it, how do I know it’s legit. It’s 75 miles away, so that’s a lot of pawn shops to check out.

Edit: I guess pawn shops have nothing to do with this case.

I would ask to see a bill of sale. If the seller claims not to have one then an account of where the guitar was bought. You’ll get a good feel if the sale is legit by the sellers response. Also get the serial number so you can do some Google detective work. If you buy it I wouldn’t worry too much because ultimately if stolen and found I would imagine you’d simply return the guitar and be reimbursed for your expense. Not sure if that is always the case though.

hmm. not sure if you receive stolen property that you would be reimbursed for anything, sadly. still, I'd ask some questions or drive to see it if you can afford the gas .

Hurts like a bastid...

Yea, who's going to reimburse the buyer for the stolen item? The thief? The police? The actual owner? None of them have any incentive to reimburse the buyer.

It's probably actually a crime to purchase a stolen item (even unknowingly). Thus, it's possible the buyer would be prosecuted rather than reimbursed.

That said, I have unknowingly purchased computer parts on eBay that were from a stolen computer. The cops made it clear that they weren't after me, but they wanted to know if I still had the parts and any information about the seller that could help them. I had neither as this was months or years later and the parts had been used to repair and sell a computer, and I never heard from them again.

I’ve read quite a few stories of people being reimbursed when they returned stolen instruments. From what you guys are saying I guess then it would be up to the owner if that were to happen.

Most of the stories like that I have seen have been returns to well off owners. It may be different if the original owner it was stolen from has less means to do that.

$500 for a Rick? Definitely either a scam or stolen. Or it has a crack in it somewhere.
