Follow up on battery for ailing iPhone 8

Previously received much forum help for fixing/upgrading my iPhone 8 so my thanks again to all who responded
[forums.macresource.com]

Went with the $49+tax battery replacement for now as we may keep this phone for a family member. I still feel the 13 pro would be my best fit currently after looking at best bang for the buck.

Went to my only local Apple store on NE side of Indy yesterday, 60 miles round trip. Arrived early for an 11am appointment. The place was packed and the walk ins had started at 10am store opening but was pleasantly surprised when they told me to pick it up in under 90 minutes. That turned in to about 3 hours as they were apparently backed up. No worries.

Lessons learned:

The store opens at 10, if you have an appointment at 11 walk in at 10 to get in the que.

My Apple ID is Always an email. You have to have 2 emails, one for the ID and one for “recovery”.

If replacing a battery always back up to the cloud, update the iOS and turn off “find my iPhone”. Have your Apple ID and PW handy. Have a photo ID for pick up. From advice on the forum and phone CSR instructions I had done these.

If you are trying to talk to a human when you reach the customer service robot at the local store number ask for “MANAGER”. You won’t get the manager but you will get a human who is at that store. Otherwise you will get a generic CSR. Also advised if you do get a store employee they can not tell you if the battery is in stock or how long it will take so no point in calling ahead anyway. Just FYI. They are told to not quote availability.

In my experience double the quoted time for repair.

Otherwise things seemed to go well. I am still looking for a better deal on a 13 Pro and keeping the iPhone 8 for gifting to a family member so fingers crossed

Old iPhones are good for teens as their first mobile phone. My teenage daughter absolutely treasures the old iPhone 7 (with new OEM battery) I passed down to her.

Find My Phone is invaluable while she's with friends, on the school bus, after school clubs/activities, etc. She's a good kid but I still like to know where she is.

Yeah, thanks again. I also noted that when I went to turn on “find my iPhone” at the bottom there is an option to have the phone contact Apple before the battery expires. Seems like a good idea as my daughter lost hers in a snowdrift without realizing it years ago. At least you would have a snowballs chance in heck of finding it (pun intended)

Thanks for the detailed information, I will commit it to memory and slowly forget most of it. That's just my brain, nothing on you.

And +1 to older iPhones for teens' first phone, ours just "graduated" from a 5S and a 6 to a 12 Mini and a 13 this summer.

Agree Lew, I always have to STF to find out what I was told previously

Glad that it worked out for you. Similar to my situation (except I backed up to my Mac). Good suggestions. Mine took somewhat less time but I did it during the week and there are more Apple stores near me.

The most important detail to remember is you will need your Apple ID and password. Write it down if you need to. They will ask you to manually type it in. Your fingerprint is not accepted.

Yes! Luckily I'm heavily invested in my Apple ID and password so I'm never forgetting that thing. I lost access to it for about 9 months once due to being a g*ddamned idiot and through only the best luck possible was able to regain access to it.

That will not be forgotten.
