I think the ring is permanently etched and it will never stay clean.

I bought one and it works rather well. However, the ring does come back after a while. I think you're right and the ring is permanently etched. I just scrub it again when I notice it.

I have used them in the past and they work great. However, they do put extremely small scratches in the porcelain which will then discolor as time passes. I have been using a scrub-free cleaning system with a chlorine tablet that seems to defeat the discoloration. It is better than the tablets you toss in the tank as it never touches the rubber gaskets.

I've used a pumice stone to clean a toilet ring with some success. In Savannah, where the water comes from a limestone aquifer and is quite hard, they'd post a recommendation in the newspaper occasionally of using a piece of old brick to get the toilet ring out since that was harder than the ring but not harder than the porcelain.

I was experimenting with using vinegar to dissolve the ring by removing all the water in the bowl and filling it with white vinegar then letting it sit for a day or two when an interesting thing happened- The ring did dissolve somewhat but not as much as I'd hoped, however HUGE chunks of calcium deposit fell down into the bowl from the part of the bend inside the toilet above the water line, and toilet's ability to accept matter on the first try was noticeably improved after that.

Some newer toilets have a coating that might be damaged by such treatment. It would have been documented with the make and model of the toilet.

Where I currently live is the first time I ever needed to use pumice. To clean, I set the tank so the bowl won't refil (point the tube back into the tank), flush to get water level down, then coat the ring with lime & rust remover and let it sit for a few hours. Stains come off a lot easier with pumice after that.

I think I've done ours too many times. They no longer come clean no matter what I use now. I have too wonder if I have worn through the porcelain or scratched it with pumice stones. May have to replace them, both are Jacuzzi brand.

I use a Fluidmaster flush valve, so I can't use chlorine tablets in the tank.

Similar in concept to Omb's recommendation, I use this Fluidmaster chlorine dispenser:






As the tank fills, water sent to the overflow tube is diverted to a container holding a chlorine tablet, then back to the overflow tube, filling the bowl.





The chlorinated water never enters the tank.

There is still a ring, but it's been steadily disappearing over time, while the rest of the bowl stays clean.

The small amount used in a toilet should have no effect on the septic due to being diluted. We have had no issues with ours.

The cleaning system I have uses two 1.5" tablets, they last between two and three months.

Clorox in bowl works

For those using a Kaboom-type system (that's what I've got), what have you been using for refill tabs?

I've found that using a tab in that kind of system, it barely lasts (so you go through the tabs very quickly), and plus I would prefer something with color, so that you know when you need to refill.

I've also noticed with some of the colored tabs though that it now leaves a colored ring ... possibly because I've had to scrub with the pumice. Still, I'd rather a colored ring than the ugly one from plain water.

I just use tablets meant for a spa. The big box stores have them the cheapest. I currently have Clorox Pool & Spa 1" Chlorine Tablets

If you use a pumice stone make absolutely sure to keep the stone wet and the porcelain you are scrubbing wet. I wear disposable rubber gloves and dip the pumice stone in the water many times as I scrub. If either is dry it will probably scratch the porcelain.

.....this is odd but would denture cleaning tablets work.....??

Nope, they dissolve WAY too quickly... but I have discovered that they work well for cleaning things like Sodastream bottles that can't go through the dishwasher.
