How often to replace batteries in emergency flashlight?

I've been replacing the batteries in my car emergency flashlights every six months. 4 Energizer D cells x 3 flashlights. Energizers website recommends every few months? What say we all?

Ukulele music I couldn't find anywhere else.

I’ve switched to using Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries in such situations.

The little blue free flashlights from Harbor Freight can go for years on a set of batteries. I have two Ryobi 18V lanterns for the house and about 15 batteries.

Same here.
They don't leak, and they stay fresh longer.
You can get adapters to use AA batteries in place of D cells, but of course the cells won't last as long when in use in that setting.

I have two flashlights and one lantern that use D cells, so it's Energizer Premium Alkaline D cells.

They don't have the life span of the Lithium version, but they have a much higher capacity, and that's why those lights were chosen.

Only two other flashlights have disposable batteries, a 2xAA and a 2xC light.

Everyready alkalines have lasted years without leaking, and still provide decent light.

Obviously I should inspect/change them probably annually, but I wouldn't bother with shorter intervals, as there's been no signs of leakage.

These are standby lights that get little use.

If they're used then the batteries would be checked/replaced more frequently.

If your kind of emergencies happen with little or no warnings (ie: earthquakes) then every three months. If not (winter snow power line failures) then every six months. I would stack the removed batteries in the closet.

Get a hand-crank or shake light, then never worry about it.
