...and bought this from the Apple refurb store:

Silver 16" refurb MBP M1 Pro 10 core and 16 core CPU. 528 SSD and 32gb memory.

A little more then I wanted to pay (of course!) but I need 32 gb of RAM. Hopefully it will keep me current for a few years yet. Might even get a silent upgrade! Supposed to be here Tuesday...

Heck yeah, that will be good for a long time! Good call on the RAM if you ask me. Can't upgrade that later, but you can always get more storage as needed.

Did I miss something, I thought starting with most 2016 models Apple was soldering the SSD to the logic board. Have they gone back to upgradable, or even replaceable?

I think the assumption is that you can add external storage, and that is usable. Adding RAM is totally not an option.

I think mikebw means, e.g., an external HD... I don't store too much on my machines and use externals for storage, so just a 528 gb SSD will be enough space. However, a silent upgrade there wouldn't be unwelcome

Correct. Could you clarify if you meant 128 or 512GB however? 528 makes my brain hurt.

I popped a SD card in mine to hold my music collection.

...Backed up with BOTH Time Machine and a nightly clone. SD cards are fragile.
