Angela Lansbury, a versatile actor who wowed generations of fans as a murderous baker, a singing teapot, a Soviet spy and a small-town sleuth among a host of other memorable roles, died Tuesday, her family announced.

She was 96.

“The children of Dame Angela Lansbury are sad to announce that their mother died peacefully in her sleep at home in Los Angeles at 1:30 AM today, Tuesday, October 11, 2022, just five days shy of her 97th birthday," her family said in a statement.

My wife will be sad about Lansbury’s death. She enjoyed stories about Cabot Cove, the town with the highest murder rate in America.

The following is a list of awards and nominations received by actress Angela Lansbury.

Lansbury, an icon in musical theatre, received seven Tony Award nominations winning five awards for Mame in 1966, Dear World in 1969, Gypsy in 1975, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street in 1979, and Blithe Spirit in 2009. In 2022 she received the Lifetime Achievement Tony Award. She also earned a Laurence Olivier Award, three Drama Desk Awards, and two Outer Critics Circle Awards.

For her work in film she earned three Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress for her performances in Gaslight (1944), The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945), and The Manchurian Candidate (1962). She received an Honorary Academy Award for her lifetime achievement in film in 2013. She also earned two Golden Globe Awards for The Picture of Dorian Gray, and The Manchurian Candidate. She earned a Grammy Award nomination for Album of the Year for Beauty and the Beast (1991). For her work in television she earned 18 Primetime Emmy Award nominations including 12 consecutive nominations for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Jessica Fletcher in Murder, She Wrote (1984-1996). She also received four Golden Globe Awards for Murder, She Wrote. In 1997 she earned a Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award, and in 2003 she earned a Britannia Award for Lifetime Achievement in Television and Film.

The was the first movie I rented from Netflix when they were a DVD-only outfit. Such a good choice.

One of my favorites and is my single favorite in it's genre. IMO it's better than other movies it's frequently unfavorably compared to like Mary Poppins because the 2 leads seem to be actual real people, not some cardboard stand-in avatars, or overly young-looking women frequently cast opposite overly old male leads.

Instead it's two fortysomethings, both self-absorbed in their own way, a conniver/huckster vs. someone so clueless they don't even know how to do life. And David Tomlinson not cast as the bad guy??? Seeming like real people as opposed to archetypes, though Lansbury kind of starts out that way, makes the movie more involving, IMO.

RIP Ms. Lansbury. One of a kind.

A fine performer who had what it took to go the distance. She set the bar high.
