I have a laptop, three Mac mini's of various vintages, two iPads and an iPhone but only the new MacBook Pro wants my password for every little thing I do. It's really getting irritating. Any way to reduce how often it asks me for a password?

This was a bizarre post to pop up on the screen when it did.

I was just thinking of my Mac Mini M1 and how it asks for a password so often.
Then my mind drifted back a couple decades to OS10.1 - when I installed it on my blue and white G3, I had to enter my password for every bloody thing. I complained about it to a friend who didn't seem at all phased by having to do that, much to my irritation.

As I was pondering all of this, I refreshed the page and saw this post pop up.

Sorry I have nothing helpful to say about it, other than "I feel you, bruh."

I occasionally get a slew of popups asking for my password. Something about apple authentication.

It is inevitablly followed by a Finder crash and a reboot

Embarassing myself on the Internet since 1978.

I get it much more frequently on my M1 MBA (Big Sur) than on any of my previous Macs. When it happens it propagates to my iPhone as well but not my iPad. Often it will require me to go through the Apple ID validation routine.

I should have been more specific. Every time I pull up a website I'm asked to enter my computer password in order to access the stored website passwords. None of my other devices do this including my new M1 Mini. I looked in the Security control panel and couldn't find anything specific to that. Thanks for any help and for S pups feels.

Is this a migrated user?

Might be problems with the migrated keychain.

I reject your reality and substitute my own!

I did not use migration assistant on any of the computers. The passwords seem to sync between devices fine. The problem is I have to enter the computer password each time to access them. Thanks

I believe Apple sees it as a security feature, and is OS sensitive.

These demands for a password pop up on my MBA all the time, as does the demand for a password to 'renew' my Touch ID and opening with my Apple Watch.

The 'Phone and iPads are the same way, and I assume that's because of the portability and attendant vulnerability to theft.

My Macs seldom ask for a password other than login.

Occasionally I'll get the odd modal window — sysplistconfig.alt* needs authentication — or some weird thing, followed by a few other others that won't go away until hitting Cancel for the 50th time.


*No, that's not an actual message, though it's just as foreign to me as any actual content.
