Sierra no longer downloads or plays 1080p movies

I have an old Mac that I use as a media server. It is running Sierra 10.12.6 I believe. Any time I purchase Apple movies I purchase the 1080 by default. Never had a problem before. But a couple of days ago I bought a movie and when I went to download it in iTunes I got the message on the screen that this version of Mac OS can only download and play 720p.

I haven't changed any software. Still running 10.12.6 and iTunes 12.8.2. I've had no trouble before. Is this another way for Apple to force people to upgrade their OS along with their Macs? I have a specific reason for running Sierra on this Mac even tough it will take higher versions. But Apple is messing with me.

Anyone have an explanation or thought?

It's been a couple of months since my last purchase. I'll have to go back and check it out- but I know I didn't get that message.

I’m not sure if it’s the exact same problem but it’s close. Worth checking. [discussions.apple.com]

I had seen that thread on Apple, but they are discussing a different problem. They can still download 1080p but their complaint is that iTunes defaults to 720p for playback. They can change that and still play 1080p. My problem is that Apple gives me an alert that Sierra can no longer even download 1080p. And like I mentioned, nothing had changed on my end.

And notice, it doesn't say iTunes can't download or play 1080p, it says Sierra can't. That's weird.

But thanks for the input, though.

My first thought was Apple is using a new version of H.265 that won't run well on machines with pre-6th gen Core processors, and it forces you to choose 1080p for every file you download.

This is weird, calling out the OS.

It's seems closer to my problem of not being able to stream HD content from AMZ because my monitor isn't HDCP, but it's obviously not the problem.

And your issue started without a software or hardware change on your end.

In my case, AMZ did mention something about my hardware, but I don't think they spelled out the HDCP issue.

This seems very likely to me. 6th gen GPUs in Macs have full h.265 hardware decoding in the GPU (I'm using a 6th gen NUC for exactly this reason), while the support for older GPUs is partial and supplemented through software/CPU cycles and maybe Apple decided this is not adequate.
