Suggestions for "hot weather" walking around socks?
Posted by: Paul F.

I'm planning on eventually going back to South East Asia for a vacation, and one of the thing I learned the week I spend there in 2016 was that heavy cotton socks and 95 degrees at 90% humidity are really not well suited to each other. Since I can't cool the area off, I'm stuck looking at more appropriate socks.

Thing is, I've never had to buy socks for HOT weather before, only nice warm ones!

I'm looking for a "low top" type sock for use with tennis shoes or lightweight shoes I don't own yet. Ideally something I can wash in a sink and have dry in a day or so (longer stay for lighter carry-on luggage!).

What should I look for generally? Material? Make? Model?

"Hot weather" and "wool socks" do not compute to me... I know they wick very well, but, it's still WOOL... It makes my brain hurt, LOL... but, I will try to keep an open mind!

Darn Tough low rise lightweight socks. Yes, they are made of wool. So are summer weight suits. Wool is just a type of cloth. Like cotton it can be woven heavy or thin.

Wear good socks. Wash and dry your socks. Change your socks. Your feet will thank you. I wear ONLY Smartwool and Darn Tough socks since my diabetes diagnosis. In the summer heat I wear light weight socks, in the winter I wear heavy weight socks.

My feet are just fine.

Me too, but as a backpacker, there is no other fabric that works in hot weather. I wear a wool t-shirt while backpacking - hot or cold weather - one of my best pieces of gear.

Open your mind and look into thin wool hiking socks. Darned Tough and Icebreaker are top brands, but pricey. DT socks are guaranteed for LIFE - you get a hole in one, send it to them and they'll send you a new pair - no questions asked - no hoops to jump through.

I understand but experience says otherwise. They wick really well which helps a lot.

Thanks all!

I shall look at merino wool socks... but, as nice as those Darn Tough socks looks, at $18 a pair, I may not invest heavily in 'em.
I'll keep looking, though!

That's $18 for LIFE!

Another advantage of Merino Wool, is the can go days-maybe weeks before needing to be washed, so you don't need to pack many pairs.
I love Merino socks and as a first layer top in Winter.

At least no one has recommended you skip the socks and just wear Crocs. Well, not yet.

I ordered two pair of 1/4 Darn Tough Hikers at $20/pr, from their site.

Maybe next time, I'll try AMZ but with a few complaint of DT's failing very quickly, and one claim of counterfeit socks, going to the source, at least for a control, seemed prudent.

And there was free USPS shipping until 2359hrs tonight.

So I'll see how it goes.

Try Gobros.com for Darn Tough, Smartwool, and many other top brands...and wait for a sale. As a matter of fact, right now everything is 17% off with promo code SOCKTOBER.

Sure, you can stock up on a couple of cheap six packs of cotton socks for daily use, but I highly recommend biting the bullet and getting a few pair of good merino socks, especially for hiking and vacations. They are perfect for what the OP describes. They dry quickly, last forever, and they are more comfortable. In a pinch, you can even rewear them without washing if you let them air out.

Here are a couple:

Buy the ships-by-sold-by Amazon product when you see accusations of counterfeits. You may pay a couple of bucks more than with 3rd party sellers, but Amazon as a seller is a reliable source.

(Even so, I never got counterfeit socks even from 3rd party sellers and I've bought the ones that I linked to at least 4 times.)

I am increasingly convinced that the Darn Tough merino wool socks are in my future... I just need to wait until payday to knock down some more VISA debt before I buy a couple pair.

Any other opinions still very much welcomed!

LL Bean also has some lightweight merino wool and wool blend socks that aren't quite as expensive as the Darn Tough brand. I've tried both and seen little difference in wear or quality so far.

A long time ago in a post far, far away, somebody mentioned LL Bean Merino wool socks, so I got two 3-pack.

Then I got two more.

I believe they were all LL Bean branded, and quite thick.

Their purpose in life was and is to keep my feet warm when at home, awake or while sleeping.

So I got Large. which was larger then 13 or for 13 and above, I don't remember, and they're not sold at LLB anymore.

They're very heavy socks, quite thick and really keep my feet warm.

They're too thick to wear with any of my current footwear, including some boots.

But that's OK, because the Darn Tough socks en route, should work with my walking shoes.

Those heavy ones might be these - [www.llbean.com], I have ordered them in the past but not recently since I haven't worn out the ones I have. They do come in XL which is for size 13+ feet. I do know I haven't seen them listed every time I shop LL Bean, and currently I don't see the 6" high versions that have been there in the past.

LL Bean also sells Darn Tough and Smartwool socks.
