Question for M2 owners?

Expecting new MacBooks Pro this month, expecting the same case, just a new chip.

Expecting the current M1 Pro/Ultra Macbooks Pro to go on closeout at the refurb store, where they are usually 15% off.

How much better is the M2 chip vs the M1 chip? Is it worth an extra $100, $200, all else being equal?

I'm obviously not in a rush to buy, but am always looking for good advice.

I guess Apple will never build me the 15" Air I really want, ala the 12" and 14" iBooks!

Maybe 10 to 20 percent faster. Don’t get the 256Gb SSD. The new MBA has MagSafe.

I’ll most likely buy a used 14” MBP M1 with 1TB SSD and 16GB RAM on eBay, eventually. Problem is, my 2015 MBA serves my mobile needs fine. And it has MagSafe and an SD slot.

Sure, but I'll bet the price difference will be more than $200, possibly significantly more.

Off the top of my head, I would say the M2 is about 15% faster.

The M2 MBA is considerably nicer than the M1 Air just in the design aspect. I don't know that the processor upgrade is necessarily worth it, but the form factor change is.

FWIW the 10-20% is extrapolated from the M2 chips. I don't expect the larger chips to see a larger bump but it would be nice.

I'd love for the M1 MBAs to drop some more at the refurb store, but I'm not sure they'll drop and/or be available.

Hurts like a bastid...

I've seen better prices from some of the retailers on new ones, they look to be clearing out stock of the M1 MBAs in favor of the newer model M2 models
. But the sales I saw last week have ended and prices are back up to the same as getting one through the Apple EDU store.

As JoeH says, there have been a few really impressive sales on M1 Pros lately, but those were short-lived.

Personally, I'm holding out for the M2 since I can get EDU pricing, but I hope don't regret waiting. I'm willing to sacrifice the savings I could have gotten for a marginal performance bump, but I'm hoping it doesn't run hotter with more fan noise or other shortcomings. The current M1 has been a huge success without any real downsides.

Well, it's "one" better, innit?

I'm on the fence as well. I'm wanting to replace my i7 13" MBP ... Want 16GB Memory and at least 1TB of memory. The 13" MBA is very tempting with the M2 but wondering if I need / want at least a 14-16" MBP.

Just confused between M1, M1 Pro and M2's...
