Heard about this on the news tonight; I'd taken it twice, each time it said I had mild hearing loss, then upon getting home tonight and taking it again, it says I have severe hearing loss... which I find hard to believe, since, if anything, my background is quieter at home and the numbers were much easier to distinguish.

So... I'm thinking their online test is messed up somehow, and maybe they're just using it to convince you to buy a hearing aid (now that they're available OTC) ?

HAHAHA. No, I'm sure I have some. But perhaps I have just tuned my hearing to be able to detect minute sounds. I do a lot of audio post-production type work.

I don't think their test accurately reproduces the spatial aspects of foreground and background noises.

just took it at home, quiet room, decent headphones. "no hearing loss" reported.

Uh oh, should I be worried? I've now gotten results ranging from "mild hearing loss" to "severe hearing loss", which I find hard to believe, because many of the numbers I am hearing perfectly clearly.

Dude... go to an audiologist and get a proper test.
(OK, OK, I admit it... I haven't been to one yet either... but I KNOW my hearing sucks, LOL... Tinnitus in my left ear, and some frequencies I just can't hear in my left ear...).

Or if you're really concerned, I'd be willing to bet there's a local audiology practice that provides free no obligation hearing tests. Yes, their goal is to sell you expensive hearing aids, but you don't have to buy them from them...or even at all.

OK, that one is saying I'm between normal and mild hearing loss... certainly not severe! There must be something seriously wrong with the BestBuy test...

I took an online test and it only said I had moderate hearing loss at 6khz and up, which is about the frequency of one the rings from my tinnitus. Went to an audiologist a few days later and that test showed severe loss above 6 khz and moderate loss in a notch at 123 herz. The loss at 123 was a surprise because I have another tinnitus ring at exactly that pitch, which meshed with testing I did at home with an iStrobosoft tuning app. It's close to a B note, and alternates with the next note up, at C#.

The audiologist test also gave me results for hearing and also understanding speech at various volumes. So yeah, get thee to an audiologist. I was amazed at how clear my hearing became trying out their hearing aids.

Cool! Normal hearing!

After playing with both, I trust this one more. I got to repeat each one that I thought I could barely hear until I could determine for certain whether I was hearing it, so transient and ambient noise and other distractions played less of a role.

(I have a 3d printer running in the next room, and the "hum" really messes with these tests.)

Keep in mind the quality of the audio equipment you take the test on will vary, yielding inconsistent result. And without properly calibrated equipment, your results will also be innacurate.

I've had about probably 30-40 hearing booth type tests over the years, it's the only way to do it.

For those of you taking the first test, try what I did and see if you get the same results on multiple tries. I just can't imagine it properly scoring me as "severe", making me think that the website must have some sort of bug.

I had the hearing test at Kaiser here in Southern California. I thought I didnt miss a lick. Repeated everything I heard. Then came the results, and showed what I was missing. I still find it hard to believe.

Yeah, you really have to just trust someone who tells you that you cannot see or hear something. You just don't know what you're missing.

I have a set of powered speakers in my office that emit a very low ringing sound, like you have to get your ear right up close to hear it. My coworker, roughy 10 yrs my senior, just can't hear it at all.

At the same time I have ringing in my ears almost all the time so who knows what I am missing.

My own personal hearing test that made me realize how MUCH hearing I'd lost was a morning I was sleeping in (about 10 years ago)... My right ear was up, my left in my pillow... I could hear, very clearly, a drip outside my window hitting the steel shelf of my barbeque. Ping. Ping. Ping. Ping.
It wasn't bothersome, but it was very clear.
At some point, I rolled over, so my left ear was "up" and my right buried in my pillow. Silence. Not just "it wasn't as clear"... SILENCE.
Lifted my head off the pillow, and, Ping. Ping. Ping. Put it back down, and silence.
That was when I realized just HOW not good my left ear is.

I have a similar issue with my right ear, though it's mainly an attenuation of mid-range frequencies, and not silence.

But as a side sleeper, I often sleep 'right ear up' when there's outside noise.

The resulting attenuation can be quite a relief.

I only have about 10% hearing in my left ear and my right is "normal" for my age. As the right gets worse I will need a special type of hearing aid that transmits sound from my left to right. Not exactly OTC.

I've had almost complete hearing loss in one ear and some loss in the other since I was a toddler, so it'll be interesting to see what my results will be. Breaking out the Planar Mags...

I have Costco do audiogrqms about every 3 years as my wife complains. When it comes up as hearing loss that isn't worth hearing aids she stops complaining for a couple of years. Then starts complaining and eventually I go get tested again.

Several months ago I had a test from Costco and got a printout. A couple of week later I used this test online and the audiogram looked virtually identical to that of Costco. I did this test because I figured I might get OTC aids and was looking for an online test that was good.

I went to a doctor a few years back to get a hearing test at the request of my wife. Results came back as normal. Although he did say I probably suffer from "wife deafness", which is where your wife says something and you don't hear it. (True story!)

I believe the broader medical term is 'selective hearing', but I may be wrong. ;)
