Followup to Spectrum question

Two Spectrum guys came out and said that signals are not as strong as they should be so they replaced the splitter in the outside box with a signal enhancer device, replaced several connectors, and submitted a work request for the line guys to address problems at the alley.

He did recommend replacing my Arris Surfboard 6141 cable modem with a newer one, even the same model, but just newer. He claims that cable modems decrease performance over time.

It's true.

Aging components and power-supplies impacted from heat and dust and corrosion will introduce noise, which degrades signal-quality.

Power surges on the cable-line can accelerate the process, and will eventually kill the modem. (Fiber doesn't have this problem.)

If you're considering a replacement, you might as well go for DOCSIS 3.1 to give yourself some future-proofing.

You joke, but over the last few years they’ve increased speed without raising the price. They went from 100Mbps to 200, and now 300 for their base speed.

Spectrum has been my provider for going on nine years now and, other than the (very) occasional outage, I've never had a problem with them. As rz points out, they have raised throughput from 100 Mbps to 300 Mbps during that time period without raising the price.

It is what it is.

Been with Spectrum under one name or another since broadband came to my area. No complaints at all.

Why not just use their router? They don't charge a monthly fee for it (at least not here)
