For those under 50 (40?) yes there was briefly a pop star named Howard.

I played one song, dear wife didn't recognize it. I identified who it was, she Googled, and after reading some of the song titles declared, "He must be British, who has song tiles like this?" < -- kind of astute, right?

I played this song, she declared, "Can't be the same person, because I know this song."

Okay ...

I know that one from Cold Case. Lots of great old music from that show. [www.tunefind.com]

There was that wave of late 90s and early 00s types of songs that sound pretty similar. We had this discussion last night about Drops Of Jupiter.

Drops would have to be considered the gold standard of that type.

My teen impressed me with knowing the artist. I had no recollection (until he told me).

Bought the 'Dream Into Action' CD when it came out. I was a early adopter of CD's. Pretty sure I still have it.

'No One To Blame', I think was his biggest hit.

I’ve seen Howard Jones in concert a couple times. Once was with a full band at a sold out concert of 17,000 people. The other was in front of about 200 of us in a small club. That time it was him and two Macs performing all his hits.

If I recall, he was considered a keyboard prodigy.

A college roommate had one of the early LPs, so I taped it using Dolby C, which killed the hiss, and more. A mistake. But I had one of the very first cassette decks with Dolby C, so it was occasionally used. OK this is odd, but I remember using a “That’s” blank … That’s was a higher end brand of cassette with a higher quality construction (the cassette actually felt more solid than TDK or most Maxell).

That roommate didn’t get along with another (there were 4 of us for a year or so) and he left. It’s weird what you remember 30+ years later. He and his dad rebuilt a ‘68 Lemans, it was cherry, and the kind of car that wasn’t necessarily unexpected in the mid-‘80s. I was impressed. Why do I know he said his dad sometimes ground his teeth? I only remember meeting the dad once. Weird. The car was that dark green common to the late 60s.

Another roommate had a later cousin of that car, a ‘77 Cutlass Salon. Last year for the big GM mid size cars. It was like the venerable Cutlass Supreme, except it had no body lean (actual anti-sway bars standard) and a console shifter. I think I told him to buy it. Really nice car. In later years he went to work for GM (not sure why, he studied architecture, but his dad was a GM lifer … ) and he told me stories of driving intercooled Regal turbos. Bastard!

But in ‘86 he said his Cutlass wasn’t running right and I rebuilt his Quadrajet. I don’t recall it being much better, but it surely wasn’t any worse. Q-jets were easy to clean up.

He’s classically - trained.

Not enough of a Howard Jones fan to track down an album, though i had a tune or two of his ripped from the radio on a mix tape (remember those?) Thanks for the nostalgia trip.

edit: "No One Is To Blame" is another song that I remember from back in the day.

I remember Mr. Jones and that song.

Actually, I enjoyed a lot of '80s music.

I am that Masked Man.

There’s trouble — it's time to play the sound of my people.

Your boos mean nothing to me, I've seen what you cheer for.

Insisting on your rights without acknowledging your responsibilities isn’t freedom, it’s adolescence.

I've been to the edge of the map, and there be monsters.

We are a government of laws, not men.

Everybody counts or nobody counts.

When a good man is hurt,
all who would be called good
must suffer with him.

You and I have memories longer than the road that stretches out ahead.

There is no safety for honest men except
by believing all possible evil of evil men.

I have Howard Jones’ greatest hits album. That’s one of the best compilation albums from the 80s, IMO.

There's almost no explaining what people like, but I think having heard it a million times helps. We try to play songs that everyone doesn't play, but we still have to relent and play "love shack" and "summer of 69", etc. I'd rather have people enjoy it than play only songs I like. There's some cool stuff in that HJ tune though. I'm pretty sure he plays/sequences all of it. Definitely ahead of his time.

My wife is a big fan of his (me, less so); we've seen him play live a few times recently. Still in good voice.
