Wanting to use an iMac computer as a monitor for another computer

I have a late 2015 27" iMac computer. Since I just want to use it as a Monitor the inside specs are meaningless (correct?) Apple's very unclear plan for the next 27" iMac has me wanting to update my computer to a Mac Mini IF I can use my current iMac screen. Are there any solutions now available?

Missed the 2014 cutoff:

You could use screensharing to fake it, but there'd be lag. It's not a great solution.

I see they have added some additional qualifiers on which OS versions this will work with, that wasn't there a couple years ago. Even with that mentioned, I found target display mode was buggy under High Sierra. Sometimes could not switch to it, and other times could not switch out of it.

Another Take-a-way by Apple. I want to thank you for your prompt response. Now my return key is not giving me a return. I'll make a new post if I can't fix it. Thanks again!!

You probably need to do something like this:

“YouTuber turns a 27-inch iMac into a fully functioning ‘Studio Display’ for half the price”

Thanks for the post, Gareth. A little steep for my frugal heart.

I would like to see a modular model that could be fairly simply converted to a display by unmounting the computer section from the back of the iMac. They could sell a kit that let folks do the conversion.

This plus a studio display would do that. The problem with All in One Units is the same as the Greatness. It's a Unit. Pick your poison.

That would do it once you bought a stand to mount the Studio Display on. To get the display with VESA mounting points is a separate item from the two mount options and does not come with a stand.

The last two iMacs I’ve owned, the displays far outlasted the CPUs etc.

It’s a real shame Apple has not sold a truly decent 27” Retina monitor. Now I am tossing a half-dozen iMacs at work and one from home into waste that if they could be used as monitors, they would last a few more years for sure.

I am glad that the new M1 Mac Mini does not seem to be a crippled product anymore. So that’s good for just getting non-Apple monitors like our home 34” wide screen. Just not retina, which I miss.

I was SO pissed to learn about this when I upgraded from my 27” Late 2015 iMac to my M1 Mac Mini.

That… is SUPER interesting. I may just have to do this. Thanks for sharing.

I can do this with my 2010, but declined when I researched how much the electrical draw is, even when idle.

Hurts like a bastid...

I like my apple cinema displays (have both a 27 and 24 led). And they work well with my m1 MacBook Pro. The price for those monitors is pretty decent under well under $400 on Craigslist).
