Just heard this. Always been one of my complaints with iPhones.

What do you all think?

Sure, its been about 1o years!
I went from an iPhone OG and iPod nano to an iPhone 5. I was mildly upset that my Clock/Radio/iPhone Charger was no longer usable, and I had to buy a new cable for my car stereo. But I muscled thru the tragedy!

More like 15 years. Stated with no pleasure. Ugh. I think the EU forced this on Apple. Thank goodness.

I never really thought about it. Didn't bother me in the least.

I like the new camera on the 14, but am not getting one because of how long it would take to transfer photos via Lightning. Hoping for USB 3.2 Gen 2 on the 15

Anonymouse,

That's one of the issues with Lightning and why I'd wish Apple had made the move to USB-C much sooner. It's USB 2.0 speeds. Backing up my 14 Pro is slow and transferring photos from my 14 Pro is painfully slow when it's more than just a few them.

Why Apple didn't go to the USB-C connector for the Airpod Max, I'll never understand. There is plenty of room for that connector, and the transition to USB-C was already underway.

Sam,

Money. Apple makes money off of Lightning connectors because they are proprietary and via its certification program. It's all about money (and control over the connection).

What is your computer? Many times it's faster to use WiFi if you have 802.11 AC or newer.

As I said in the other topic:
Now they need to put a USB-C charger in with the new iPhones because most people do not have one. My 2020 SE did not have one with it when I got it last year so the USB-C to Lightning cable is still in the box. I have a M1 MacBook Pro now so I guess I need to dig that cable out.

Which is why I think it is silly. Lightning came out before USB-C, and re the argument that charge cables should be standardized, USB is in a glass house there. I’ve got a box full of useless cords in my basement with USB A on one ide, and six different flavors of USB on the other - printer style, USB mini, USB micro, plus a bunch of proprietary plugs.

Meanwhile, a Lightning plug can be used with any kind of USB A wall wart. But we can expect that to change to USB C now, and all of those functional USB A chargers go into the unusable box.

There are plenty USBA to USBC charging cables. USBA wall warts will live on for decades.

Best estimates are that Apple makes several BILLION dollars on their lightning cable monopoly.

USBC is the future, and Apple knew it. But hard to turn down a ton of cash.

Perhaps, but even if so, that means I’ve got to buy new cables and throw away my perfectly functional USB to Lightning cables!

I'd preferred the 'Phone kept the Lightning connector, along with related accessories.

I'm willing to deal with the heartbreak and tragedy of having to have the 'extra' cable Lightning cable.
