Thanks. For now I'm doing the workaround where I add photos I need now to my shared folder, and import from there... so I just want to get it working going forward, I'm sort of OK for the moment. It's clunky but familiar and working.Quote

If it makes you nervous, though, you could make a backup copy of your photo library first.

A while ago I helped someone using El Cap who was having syncing issues.
I traced his problem back to his more recent iPhone using formats that weren't supported in the older mac os. The sync would stop when any such item was encountered.
Solved by upgrading to High Sierra.
