F/U on my cervical fusion surgery.

I’m home but had to stay a day longer than was supposed to took a slight bad turn yesterday of lightheadedness, dizziness and blood oxygen was a tad low, they were afraid of possible blood clot but I'm feeling fine today.

There’s good and bad news, good news is one disc, C4-C5 disc, was in too good of shape to remove even though the MRI showed it to be bad, but he said the other two discs between C5-C7 were in terrible shape, basically bone to bone. Bad news is the he said I have bad osteoporosis and is he's afraid the screws may not hold and I’ll probably have to wear my rigid neck brace much longer than the 6 weeks that he first thought. I told wife they should have put some Loctite on those screws smiley-laughing001 His PA that assisted in on the surgery said she wouldn't label it full blown osteoporosis just yet until some test has been run, she said it could be osteopenia.

Everyone in the hospital told me I picked the right surgeon.

I already have much better strength in hands and arms and the numbness on my fingers is nearly gone. Still having some shoulder pain which they that was completely normal, they said my body has to get used to this rigid collar with no head turning and such. Throat is fairly sore and having some difficulty talking but surprisingly I'm not having much trouble swallowing food.

Thank you all so much for all the positive thoughts, prayers and well wishes. If I follow their instructions I think I'll do well.

I've been offline since Thursday morning so I didn't see many of your comments on the other thread until just a bit ago.

My anesthesia guy said he's been doing this for 30 years and my pseudocholinesterase deficiency case is #4 on his books and knew exactly how to handle it and what use. Woke up in about 1 1/2 hours just fine, no nausea or anything. He said this condition is quite rare.

From Thursday: Going in for another spinal fusion tomorrow.

Always glad for reasonably good outcomes; not the best, but ever so much better than the worst.

Congrats and speedy healing.

I told her they should've used red permanent, only heat will break that lose smiley-laughing001

BTW: Right now all I'm needing is some Tylenol which is great.

I suggest you get a box of multi-colored Sharpies, take them to your local elementary school, and turn your rigid neck brace into a 3rd grade art project.
That way, you'll be able to embrace the brace for its full duration, and won't be tempted to try to escape from its clutches prematurely.
Glad ya survived so you can enjoy the recovery, your newfound strength, food swallowing, and beyond.

Glad you're out of hospital, and able to eat (always a good thing!). May your bones knit quickly around those screws.

Glad it went well! I'll be undergoing much more minor surgery on Monday...removal of the plate and screws that were holding my collarbone together.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Next time see if they’ll use Superglue instead of screws.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the encouraging words!

I'm feeling pretty good today. Body is still getting used to this collar mess, back and neck is pretty sore. They put me on a 5 lb. weight lifting limit due to the bone issue, normally it's 10 lbs. for 6 to 8 weeks. That's going to take some getting used to. I get a wound inspection on the 11th and a x-ray and full post op. checkout on Dec. 14 I think.

I'm so ready for a full shower but not until tomorrow they said.

Well, you could sit in the tub and wash your pits. But I’m glad to hear it is going well. Be sure to have your wife wait on you hand-and-foot.

Ordered a cheap shower stool last night on Amazon and it was here at 8am. Washed from the neck down, felt good.

Glad you are out and on the mend!

Get that bone density scan now for a baseline, one in two years to see your progress.
