Too many crashes at airshows.

That's pretty rough. Airshows seem to be fairly frequent accident scenes. They bring together a large number of unrelated pilots flying aircraft that may or may not be up to snuff with regards to modern safety standards. A couple of months ago I went to the Reno Air Races, where the jet race had a fatality, including a spectacular fireball crash that killed one of the pilots, apparently due to the pilot blacking out due to a high-G maneuver to attempt to maintain the lead. I'm not sure that there's anything to be done about this. High performance racing of any kind and flying aircraft built before modern safety standards creates risk, and the consequences of a mistake are dire.

This may change these old war bird operations drastically.

It appears the B-17 had a total blind spot that would prevent the pilot from ever ever seeing much less taking evasive action to avoid the Bell.

The other plane was coming in from the side and behind the B-17, and was in a turn from the short section I could see on the posted videos. Not so much a blind spot as the other plane flew right into the B-17 as if the pilot didn't see it in their path.

Right, the P-39 was in a left turning bank, with a low wing, which obscured his view of the B-17. This is a very common cause for aircraft collisions. It particularly occurs when one plane is on a straight final to land, and the other is on turning onto final (from a base leg), and the turning plane is a low wing.
