The jubilant celebrations in Kherson make my eyes water

These people have been oppressed for 9 months and now suddenly, they are free again.

A video of a grandmother dropping to her knees as her grandson in full uniform and kit runs up to hug her. British reporter (who was with a tank) swamped by grateful citizens. Celebrations of all kinds. It looks a lot like a city in north america celebrating a superbowl win, but when you realize what these people are celebrating... a tear comes to my eye too.

Just search and you will find...

For those of us who have no idea what a Kherson is...

KHERSON, Ukraine — Scores of people filled the city center Saturday afternoon, celebrating the liberation of the regional capital less than 24 hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Kyiv’s forces had retaken much of the regional capital from Russian occupation. Babushkas and children waved to arriving soldiers as young men stood on cars, waving Ukraine’s yellow and blue flag. Explosions boomed in the distance, but most of the revelers didn’t seem to notice. They had their city back.

But Ukrainian officials warned that the humanitarian situation in the city remained “threatening.” One official, who had spoken to residents in the city, told The Washington Post that the Russians had left the city “on the brink of a humanitarian crisis,” adding: “There is no water, no electricity, no heating.”
Air raid sirens sounded across Ukraine on Saturday, and a strike in the southern Mykolaiv region killed seven people Friday — a stark reminder that even as Kherson comes under Ukrainian control, Russian forces on the eastern bank of the Dnieper River will still be able to hit Mykolaiv with drones or missiles.

Z blew up the roadway at the top of the dam. They've threatened to blow the dam, which would flood the city and many towns downstream.

This continues to be a war of terror.

I understand their immediate joy, but this is not over and done.

I fear that until someone puts a bullet through Putin's head (which is extremely difficult given his extreme security measures), the residents of Kherson will experience multiple future repeats of the carnage (including bullets through their heads) created by Putin.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan
