New MBP: how to approach 2 workstations

Greetings..

Thanks to the great folks here, I was able to make a quick decisions ad ended up with a 14" MBP. My previous machine is a 2015 MBP, so I'm trying to get caught up on USB-C/TB4, etc.

I will be bringing the machine back and forth from the office to home, with stations setup at each location. Previously, at one location, I had an, extra apple charger, a backup 2.5" TM drive, a USB hub, and two external monitors plugged into the thunderbolt ports w/ VGA adapters (0ld monitors are all I have access to right now).

How would one approach this workstation with the new machine? I need a way to charge the machine, hook up the monitors and external drive, etc. I have 1 old USB peripheral i'd like to keep for now.

Should I just get some USB-C to VGA adapters and another for USB-C to USB + another apple charger? It sounds like the machine can charge itself from ports other than the MagSafe (?) so how do folks approach this?

Thank you

Get a pass through USB dock/hub, a single USB connector then charges and gives you at least one external monitor. Install whatever USB-A devices you like such as keyboard mice, etc. Add ethernet as needed.

Where you have two monitors, use a second cable to connect to the second monitor. I like to have the two cables on the left-hand side of my MBP14 so that I just connect the two at the same time. I add a dual cable end connector (forget what it's called) so that the two ends are tied and I do not lose them.

And L E A D E R ! That's a great computer.

is it redundant to get something with a SD card reader and a few other things one wouldn't use? That price tag is steep..

is there a better option. What, exactly, is a "pass through" hub?

Is there a more affordable price point for something that will also charge the machine vs. just a peripheral expansion?

Something like this is a lot cheaper :

Just plug in a USBC up to 100 W power supply, then plug this into you Mac. Will charge and add a ton of ports.

Yup, I've got one for the office, one for home- just plug and unplug a single USB C cable.

one more..

do the 3rd party chargers + cables work or should I only buy apple? It would be nice to not have to take my charger home and back.

thanks

Hi Kiva, don't know if this will be useful info for you or not, because my monitor is pretty new* and I only have one. However, I plug the monitor into a Thunderbolt port on my MacBook (using the one on the right side next to the HDMI port) and while at my desk I don't have to use the charger and cable at all — the laptop keeps its charge from the monitor (which is of course plugged into a regular outlet). I'm not especially laptop-literate so don't know how it would work with more than one older monitor and adapters.

Hope you enjoy your beautiful new machine, and maybe Santa will bring you a newer monitor!

Third party chargers work great. Its nice to be able to but inexpensive chargers.

oooooo...this is an interesting idea. Do you know what would be the best search term for a compatible monitor? I could probably get them to buy one for me....sounds like the search term for other models would be "power delivery"?

thank you for the idea!
