CNET: Apple satellite SOS emergency feature now active on iPhone 14

Some of the iPhone 14's biggest new features are invisible tools and services that you'll hopefully never have to use. Emergency SOS via Satellite, which Apple announced in September but just launched on Tuesday, is one such feature -- and I had the chance to try it out.

Beyond the clouds and sky, hundreds of miles above the Earth flying by at 16,000 miles per hour, are communications satellites. They're too high to be seen by the human eye, but could be vital for getting you help when you (or someone you love) is stranded, injured and out of cell service range. The iPhone 14 can connect to these satellites to contact an emergency dispatcher even when you can't make a phone call. You can also share your location with loved ones via a satellite without sending a message.

Like Car Crash Detection, Emergency SOS via Satellite is something you hope you won't ever have to make use of. But if you're wondering how it works, I had the chance to test it out at Apple Park. If you want to try the service out for yourself, Apple added in a built-in demo mode that lets you connect to a satellite without calling 911.

can someone try this in airplane mode?

If it uses sat communications, it shouldn't need the internet. If it works, I may drop my sat comm device that I use for backpacking - it carries a monthly fee and an annual fee.

there's a demo mode that let's you try it out. demo modes shuts off cellular so it wouldn't be necessary to even employ airplane mode to test it. as the article note, you can only send emergency texts not voice communicate as i imagine a sat phone allows you to. watch the vid with the article.

I'm not in the market for a new 'Phone anytime soon, but I'd really like to have this feature.

Hikers, motorcyclists, and any other adventurers have had InReach and Spot devices that do something similar, and it would be nice to have this in one device.

Hardcore adventure riders typically have a phone, GPS, and SAT locator device.

For them, not one of those devices could replace the others, but for those more — sedate — adventures, something like this could be just the ticket.

I only use my 'Phone as a navigation device for my bike, an only occasionally thought about getting a dedicated GPS after Navigon was gone, and not ever considered a SAT phone.

But I've experienced stretches of no cell service between here and MT without once leaving two-lane blacktop.

I wonder how much it will cost after the 2 year trial is over.
