Electric vehicles are not reliable — yet: Consumer Reports

Consumer Reports gathered data on more than 300,000 vehicles from the 2000 to 2022 model years, with a few newly-introduced 2023 models. In order to predict reliability for new models, those redesigned for 2023, and models with insufficient data, Consumer Reports “analyzes the brand’s reliability history, the previous generations, and, if applicable, the reliability of models with shared components.”

Of the models surveyed, EVs and hybrids are some of the most desirable and in-demand, but their reliability ratings are at the opposite ends of the spectrum.

“EVs are gaining in market share, and CR has more data than ever before from its owner surveys to gauge their reliability,” Consumer Reports said. “But with the introduction of so many new models, the results are, not surprisingly, subpar.”

Subpar is good, right? I’d rather get a subpar 66 on a par 69 rather than an 89 on the course.

That surprising.

You can't beat an EV's fuel economy, low oil use, and the engine just purrs.

"Reliability" is such a blanket term. If the problem is that 50% of electric cars have bits of trim and cladding falling off in cold weather, I'd be far less concerned than if 5% are having battery fires.

Yeah, I'm not putting too much stock into their take on this. Too vague/blanket-y.

Tesla Motors, the market leader in EV sales and the manufacturer on which CR received the most data from owners, continues to have issues with body hardware, steering/suspension, paint and trim, and climate system on its models, but the electric powertrains have very few problems. Tesla rose four spots this year to 19th place in the brand rankings. The Model 3 again has average reliability while all the other Tesla models–the S, Y, and X –are all below average.

EV owners from other manufacturers reported charging problems, battery problems, and electric drive motor issues. Of the 11 EV models on which CR has sufficient data, only four have average or better predicted reliability.

I feel like they're working out the kinks. I enjoyed my experience with my Chevy Bolt. It got smashed up before it could have any other troubles and I just used one of my other vehicles. 4Runner is my main rig with it's gas guzzling self.

We're moving to all-electric. Unless the political winds shift, my state will end sales of new gas powered vehicles in just 10 years. I don't want another electro car til then. Then the range will be a thousand miles per charge if I'm still alive (knock wood).

teething pains are no surprise.

I'll pick up something mid-tier like a used Bolt EUV when it drops to the price point I want.

easy to recharge that overnight at home using a smart plug on my dryer's 30A/240VAC circuit.

Bah humbug.... I've had my Tesla Model 3 for 4 years and it's been the best and easiest car I've ever had. It's only been in once, for an air-conditioner actuator that needed to be replaced under warranty.

My new BMW i4 is at a port in Germany waiting to be put on a ship.

I can't imagine going back to a gas car.

I wish the Volt tech didn't go away so quickly. something in a larger size vehicle with that tech would have been my next car.

So... part of their data-set is from 2000, up through 2022?
So, from 2000 to 2012 or so, can you name any EV's?
Right, that's because they were awful... and they're averaging them in with 2018 and later models to arrive at "sub-par"?

I recognize that EV's have a lot more development to go, and even Tesla (which I like) has some things to iron out in the factories QC departments.... but, EV's were a WHOLE different league prior to 2017-18 ish to present.

Toyota just introduced a new Prius Plug-in Hybrid. Similar electric range to a Gen 1 Volt. Yes, GM dropped the Volt way too soon. There's also the Rav4Prime if you want to bend over and pay above MSRP.

i've been lurking on the Facebook Rav4Prime group. They are available but the wait can be as much as a year and a half. it also seems if you're willing to pay in the stratosphere and/or accept a base model you can get one sooner than later.

I'm leery of CR's various review terms or metrics.

Looking at some speaker recommendations (which I stopped doing years back) they stated their main consideration was 'accuracy', which as applied by them, seemed pretty vague.

So this report on eVs really comes up wanting, to me.

Toyota fought against EVs long and hard but is finally giving in. Toyota preferred hydrogen.

I think GM was losing money on every Voltec-drive car. In the month they quit making the Volt it was the second largest selling EV-type vehicle after Teslas. An SUV with a Voltec system would have been a fantastic seller.

Rumor has it that Mazda is producing something similar. Electric drive, and the twist is that they're putting in a Wankel as the generator.

I question CR also here.
My 2018 Volt had the radio crap out, fixed under warrantee.
That's it.
Oh, I did have to put new tires on after 50,000 miles.

Ah yes, the theoretical Prius Prime. Tried to buy a new one from any dealer in the country for a year and failed.

They should actually make some this time.

Mazda and their Wankels... The just won't quit trying to make that evolutionary dead end work. Don't misunderstand me, I applaud that... but, I'm afraid they may dead-end their Hybrid that way.
But, an "EV drive with efficient engine driven generator" is what Hybrids SHOULD have been many years ago.

I can't take that rumor seriously. I'd love to see a great low maintenance wankel engine but it just hasn't happened.

Consumer reports has always been a bit suspect with the car recommendations. Just too many variables and not enough weighting of the important ones. Also, I would be very surprised about the EV's. I have just not heard of that many issues. My Volt is fantastic. I can't believe GM quit making them.

In the past, Consumer Reports came under fire for their reliability rankings, after it was shown that people who buy BMWs are much more likely to complain about a squeak on the glove compartment latch, whereas Yugo owners are happy if only one of the wheels falls off.

But, given the experience of my family and friends, I won't be buying an EV soon because of quality control, reliability, and repairs. I have a friend, I haven't said anything, but her Tesla looks like it's some bad salvage title frankenstehicle. She had delivery delays and I'd bet it was because they were just swapping parts around like Mr. Potatohead, only with less attention to detail. She did get a door replaced or repainted -- the paint color didn't match -- but accepted it despite the window trim being askew.
