Hery, Buffalo really is going to get socked
Posted by: Steve G.

This is from Channel 4 in Buffalo
[www.wivb.com]

Channel 7 in Buffalo used to feature 'The Weather Outside, done from the station's parking lot. No matter what the weather, good old Tom Jolls was out there. It was a classic bit of sadistic fun enjoyed by most Buffalonians.

Yes, Tom was there during the incredible stretch of galumphing snows during 1977. You could sit warm inside with your beer and watch Tom get battered. What fun!

I am about 20 minutes south from the KB studios. Just off route 5 and about 1000’ from Lake Erie.

You should move further south...like 700 miles

Sorry... Dennis R... we sent it all at you. Lake Effect snow in CLE fizzled out. Yesterday morning we had thunder and snow and I thought... oooh man... but it died down.

I was interviewed by the Rochester Times-Union back in the mid-80s'. I was told later that they never bring in job prospects between November and April because it is just a waste of time once they see the weather.

Best job I never took.

That much snow can be scary.
I recall a snowfall in southeastern Pennsylvania in late 1995 of about 2-3 feet, with massive snow drifts. I was unaware that it had snowed until I opened the curtain to the patio window and saw snow right up to the top of the window. It gave me quite a fright.

Football played in a snowstorm is great fun to watch, brings to mind the Pats snowplow game and of course the "Tuck Rule" game.

It is horrible out here in Hamburg near the lake. It was over my waist and me and my wife tried to slowly make it to the garage and the small tractor with snowblower. Well I fell and couldn’t get up. I thought I would need emergency rescue. My wife managed to get me up and we made it to the garage. We got about 12’ in about an hour. It got stuck so we left it and went in the house. We will stay here until they plow the roads and friends come plow us out or until it melts. It is easily over 4’ and still coming down.

I’d lend you my blower but the transportation between our homes kills that plan.

Meh!

It's Buffalo.

"We've got 5 feet of snow!"

"It must be Friday."

Was watching a live feed from Orchard Park this afternoon, saw a guy with a plow on the front of his Toyota Sienna pull over in front of a stuck 16-wheeler and plant a Bills banner on its grill.

That's Buffalo.

According to the National Weather Service, the suburb of Orchard Park, home to the NFL’s Buffalo Bills, reported 77 inches by early Saturday.
(Yeah, that's Six and a half Feet)

and meanwhile off Lake Ontario...
About 80 miles northeast of the city, the town of Natural Bridge, near the Fort Drum Army base, reported just under 6 feet.

I’ve snowblowed six+ feet once with my four wheel drive blower which only has three foot high drift cutters. The blower worked pretty good, the drift cutters - not so much. I had to use a shovel to knock down the edge, then blow that snow away, rinse and repeat, repeat, repeat. A crust tends to form on the top 6” of drifting snow even when it is too cold to thaw and then refreeze. The crust keeps the snow from collapsing into a pile. It was time consuming and it would have been nice to have help with the shovel but it got done.

Deep drifted snow is actually a lot easier to deal with because it has less water content than heavy wet snow which will plug the blower. I use Pam cooking spray on the impeller chute which actually helps quite a bit with heavy wet snow.

I don’t know how a pickup mounted plow would handle six foot deep snow.

Commercially, I’ve used a front end loader which easily handles the deepest snow we ever get in our flat area. I’ve also used a road patrol (grader) which does a very creditable job even in deep snow because they have lots of clearance. I never had to use the front mounted V-plow; the moldboard was quite adequate. If the snow gets deep enough or traction is inadequate, we would use the front end loader to push against the end of the mold board and we could buzz right along (~5 MPH) when clearing parking lots. We never needed to use tire chains even when there was ice under the snow. Clearing snow is big business with companies buying equipment to use to clear snow that may sit idle most of the year. Ten inches of snow in a parking lot can take a week or more to get rid of. $$$$$

for those who are unacquainted with lake effect.
This is downtown Buffalo facing south. You can see the clearly defined the storm coming off Lake Erie. heading east, missing Buffalo entirely.

Hell, no. I left in 1977 in the midst of one of the most colossal blizzards of all time. I'm following this along with all my old Ex-Buffaloid pals. We're having a ball.

One of my brothers worked at a salvage yard for a few years about 40 years ago. For winter they had a contract to clear snow at a nearby truck stop, so would move their front end loader there for the season. He was the usual operator, I heard a few tales. On the side he would make extra cash getting trucks free of the ice pockets their tires would melt into. Used the bucket to lift the end of the trailer and move it sideways a bit.

'we're #1'

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WIVB) — This week’s snowstorm has set a state record for the amount of snowfall within a 24 hour period, Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz confirmed on Sunday.

The historic snowstorm made landfall in Western New York on Thursday and dumped snow on the region until Saturday night. The record was for the most snowfall within a 24 hour period, the previous record having been set in the Tug Hill region of New York State in the 1960s.

Orchard Park had the most overall snowfall of the storm, with 77 inches. Hamburg had 73.7 inches, while Blasdell had 65 inches, rounded out by Elma’s 58.2 inches and West Seneca’s 49 inches for the top five towns and villages that had the most snow.
