How Dry I am, - Qatar banns beer from World Cup

Qater is expected to announce today that all beer sales during the World Cup have been canceled. The plan had been to allow sales before and after a match, but not during gameplay.

Budweiser, which is one of FIFA’s partners, tweeted “Well, this is awkward.”

(not allowing Budweiser to be sold could improve Qatar's human rights record)

Isn’t beer the only reason why some games are watchable?

Well, they run to one end of the field from the other end, turn over the ball, run back to the end they started from, turn over the ball, then run back again, turn it over...

So, yeah, no beer will make it tough to watch!

Something different...

No different than any other sports. Beer makes American football and baseball tolerable as well. It may also keep you from freezing at Packers-Vikings games.

Now the world will see that it's not the alcohol that makes English soccer fans intolerable!

Soccer/football hooligans don't need alcohol to hool, and it's not just the English that make soccer/football combat vice competition.

Between thuggery in the stands and faux foul play on the field, I'm not a fan.

Actually, not much of a fan of any sport.

Well, there is the acting in order to draw penalties, etc.

Did Budweiser pay to sponsor the World Cup? If so, I hope that they're asking for a refund.

Just as was paying people to be there and then not paying them once it became public. That they bribed their way into a WORLD CUP - says more about FIFA than them.

It was a complete absurdity that Qatar was allowed to bribe their way into hosting the world cup in the first place. Now that they have reneged at the last minute on a formal agreement to allow beer that has been in place for a very long time it is a travesty that the games will be allowed to continue to be played there.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Oh it's different from other sports. You can go an entire game without a score, or even an exciting play. Especially how it's played in the US where the main tactic is to wear down the other team.

This may be true as I don't watch the US play and that sounds dull. But as someone who was brought up watching baseball, and then watched tons of football and basketball at state college and long after, I find international soccer more interesting than those now. The game has more of a flow, like hockey but less hectic.

The Flop is reprehensible and IMO should be cause for ejection to rid it from the sport, but watching the best teams try to wrangle the ball in and strike quickly when the opponent opens something up inadvertently or makes an outright mistake is great to watch. I think it takes a knowledge of how plays form, seeing into the future 10, 30, 60 seconds to plan a play, is the interest. It's like Chess that way and yeah, if you're not into that planning and play anticipation, is every bit as not-exciting as watching a chess match.

Thanks Lew, that saved me a whole bunch of writing to say the same thing.

It is also partially dependent on cultural differences. I would pay good money NOT to watch baseball or American football, not great fan of sports in general, but will watch at least the final rounds of the World Cup, Euro cup, Copa America. De gustibus...

John Oliver had a good show yesterday on this topic ( not beer specific, but the Qatar human rights and FIFA's corruption)
