We found them very useful on a trip to the Baltic 2 months ago. Not only being able to track luggage as it went from one plane to another, but also able to identify that the luggage carousel was misidentified after we landed in ATL. I was able to go 2 carousels over and find our bags following the AirTag notification. Then went back and told our fellow travelers to go that-a-way for their luggage!

I bought them, I would like to put them in kids backpack in case their phones run out of battery. Will other kids in the bus get alerts that there are AirTags following them?

One Airtag costs $28. Four Airtags for $80 is a great deal if you need four of them.

For those that have not used one in real life, it works great as a "poor man's" GPS tracker. There are limitations, like if you're tracking your constantly moving kid in a crowded comic book convention. But all in all, for $20/ea, it's good cheap peace of mind.

Scroll about half way down and you'll see how it works and then the various security features. Other kids with iPhones on the bus won't get notification that there's an AirTag somewhere on the bus. But their iPhones will all Apple to determine exactly where you kid's AirTag is.

I think that should work, assuming it is a more recent model and has up to date iOS. From what I understand iPhone 12, 13 and 14 even when shut down, they still wake up briefly to send a Bluetooth signal into the world. You should be able to track such an iPhone with find my things, but I am not sure how often it pings and how long the battery lasts.
