old Filemaker files

I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but figured I'd ask anyway.

I have an old Filemaker database I created that contains old invoices and client lists. When I go to open it I can't because it's Filemaker 6 and You can’t open the application “FileMaker Pro” because PowerPC applications are no longer supported..

Thankfully, it's more of a curiosity than anything critical, but is there any easy way to get around it? It certainly wasn't worth keeping an old computer around just to access them. If they're gone, they're gone. And frankly, I might as well just delete the whole Filemaker 6 folder from my computer.

Thanks.

If you’re serious about it, I think there’s some kind of virtual machine you could install that would run that old of an OS.

Wurm,

What version of Filemaker do you have on your machine? Just FMP 6? If so, you need to find someone with newer versions of Filemaker. They can open the file and export the data for you in a tab-delineated file or possibly even as an Excel file. Or just convert it into the format of a newer current OS friendly format. Might even be able to do this with a demo version of the current flavor, if demo versions are available.

Good question.

What apps do you have available?

This has a link for a trial version of FileMaker Pro. Maybe open and export to CSV?

Are you actively using a newer version of FileMaker, or were you using FM 6 until very recently?

I would consider the time to create a workable system to transfer/update the old files, versus just creating new versions from scratch. It might be worth the time updating to a more current file structure if there are more than a hundred old records. Anything much less than that and I would just redo it. It might be possible to root through the old files with some text/HEX editor to read the old data. I don't know right off if FM compacts/encrypts data.

FileMaker 7 through FileMaker 11 can open and convert FileMaker Pro 6 databases to their new file format.

FileMaker 12 and later can only open and convert Filemaker 7 through 11 files.

FM 5, 5.5, and 6 use the same file format (.fp5).
FM 7-11 use a different format (.fp7).
FM 12 and up use another format (.fmp12) which is still used for current versions of FileMaker.

I have pretty much all things old FileMaker. PM me, and I'll convert it for ya.
We have a Snow Leopard machine that has FMP6 ready to go at all times. Easy-peasy.

Thanks, all.

Not worth the aggravation. I haven't used FM on my computer for at least five years. And I thought I had a newer version on my work computer, but since I haven't used it there for about as long, when they updated the computer a couple of years ago I vaguely remember telling them I never used it so not to bother..

Likewise. I even have some older FM5 - 11 servers running.

Sounds like you don't care at this point, but if you want Buzz or myself to upgrade the files to a newer version and/or export the data out to something else - just let one of us know.

Very generous of you both. I may end up taking you up on the offer. Thanks!
