HIFI speaker question
Posted by: davemchine

My family room is about 20’x25’ and my speakers are Magnepan 3.2i so they radiate both back and front. We are switching from carpet to hardwood so I need an appropriately sized area rug to tame the sound. Should the carpet extend behind the speakers? Should the speakers even sit on the carpet? Thanks for any info.

Ukulele music I couldn't find anywhere else.

I don't think it matters, but I am not an audiophile.

You want feet for the speakers that go into the carpet, so the speakers don't wobble/slide.

If you're putting carpeting in front, I'd guess you want carpeting in the back, to get equal absorbance. But I'm not expert.

I would call that personal pref. There's no right answer.

Depends on your wall treatment, if any, ceiling height, couches, chairs, etc.
How loud you listen, what you listen to.
If you listen loud, which I don't think is the idea behind Magis, I'd put 'em on a 1/4" decoupling piece of neoprene rubber or other isolation so your TT doesn't skip. It should also help to tighten and clarify the soundstage.

I had a client years ago with Magis. He only listened to 2nd gen masters of string quartets at perhaps 80db. Stunning.

Me, I'd carpet in front for 6' to reduce close floor reflections.

Not familiar with Magis polar pattern, but if they do radiate from the rear, I'd think it's only bass, which is omni-directional anyway, below say 125Hz.

Maybe goog sound isolation and Magi?

Have someone help you tune the room it can be done to the level you wish. Very easy to go down a rabbit hole, but looking around, experimenting, and finding a balance you like is worth it.
