I just got AirTags, but... cannot share location with family.

I bought some AirTags, and I was hoping that I could drop one in kids backpack and wife and I can see where he is.

Well, only I can see it, she cannot. I searched and ...

AirTags cannot be shared with family members

Oh well, I should have searched before I bought the item.

now I need to decide if it's good enough and keep the pack or try to return. My fault, I should have done my research before purchase.

can't you put two tags - one for you and one for your wife in the backpack?

Yes, that could work. twice the cost though. Also, I am not sure if the kid will get stalking alerts if Airgats, other than his own, are following him.

I understand Apple takes privacy very seriously, but we already share location with each other. I can see all their devices, and they can see my devices, except AirTags. I am still not sure how this would violate any privacy.

Yep, my sister got some for my mom and was shocked that she couldn’t help her find her phone.

“ wife and I can see where he is. “

Both sign into the same AppleID, perhaps.

I don't want to do that, imagine the mess with iMessages and so on.

Yeah, I wish they'd fix this. Doesn't really bother me because I'm only one who manages these types of things in our household anyway, but I can appreciate your frustration, and I don't know why this hasn't been addressed.

But this is just one item on a long list of Apple ID/Family Sharing improvements that I'd like to see.

I can decide if I want to share my AirTag with family or not, it's up to me how to set my privacy settings. I don't see Apple's concern here.

Apple very purposefully doesn't want AirTags to be used as location finders of people. Apparently a primary concern is with people tracking others surreptitiously. For example, an ex-partner tracking where the other person is. This is why an AirTag will give an alert if it's too far away from the iPhone that it's associated with for a particular period of time. There have been reports of people finding an AirTag in their purse or other personal items. I'd bet that Apple will not change this policy since they actually hardened it up after AirTags were released and there were reports of unwanted tracking.

Here's their general comment about AirTag and unwanted tracking of individuals: [www.apple.com]

Well, there's always these, [us.eufy.com] , if you can wait until the end of February.

Cheaper, have some pluses, maybe some minuses, but say 'Share with Friends and Family'.

They appear to lack Precision Finding, my reason for buying them, but if you need to share one with others, the Smart Link may do want you need.

We got and Airtag to put on our dog as he likes to run away at times. I'm the only one who can track him, which is useless if I'm at work and my wife or daughter are home. I can understand strangers, but not FAMILY sharing?

I guess I'll have to look for another brand.

thanks, that may fit the bill for me more so than an AirTag.

Yes, he will. Although you can disable that on his phone (but then if someone else places one in his backpack to stalk him, he wouldn't know, although I don't know if it will alert you to multiple Airtags, so he may not know anyway since he would already have to ignore the alert about your Airtag).

It will also start beeping every time he moves his bag if it's been away from you for a while (actual timeframe varies). I had to remove the speakers from the Airtags on our cats. When I was out of town for a few days, they started beeping every time the cats moved. Cats didn't seem to mind, but it was driving my wife crazy.

I fully understand this, but once again, I want to share with Family, with whom I already share my location.

Maybe I didn't make myself clear when I posted the original message.

I have 4 AirTags that I want to label "Kid 1", "Kid 2", "Car 1" and "Car 2".

I want all 4 of us to track these 4 objects. Should a foreign AirTag track us, I want to know. should my kid forget his backpack on the school bus, I want others to get alerts.

Should someone steal my car, I want to know where it is, and I want them to know they are being tracked so they abandon it ASAP.
