(CNN) - At least 16 people are injured and one person was killed after a car drove through an Apple store in Hingham, Massachusetts, District Attorney for Plymouth County Tim Cruz said in a news conference Monday.

Around 10:45 a.m. numerous 911 calls came in for help at Derby Street Shops, Cruz said. Hingham police and fire personnel responded shortly thereafter to find several people injured at the Apple store, Cruz added.

“A dark-colored SUV appears, went through at a rate of speed undetermined, through a … glass window and struck multiple people,” Cruz said.

The vehicle went straight through to the back of the store, pinning some shoppers and employees against the wall.

My wife told me about that when she came back from errands several hours ago. At that time, details hadn't been released regarding injuries or even what exactly happened. Straight through to the back of the store!? I can't imagine what that must have been like. That vehicle must have been really moving. It's a very popular plaza. That's the store I go to as it's the nearest one to me, though the last time I was there was shortly before I bought my Apple Watch. Damn.

The average citizen is terrible at estimating speed, and is often influenced by size, type, color or any combination.

It takes no small amount of practice and disassociation to be accurate +/- 1mph.

Most people would be lucky to get speed within 10mph, but everybody thinks they can do it.

Yahoo News described the SUV as a 2019 Toyota 4Runner.

That probably added 5mph or more to many estimations by the general public.

Apple's open floor plan probably didn't offer a lot of resistance to the travel of the 4Runner.

I don't know how much one weighs, but its weight and speed, along with what I see as somewhat low resistance, no doubt made it pretty easy to get to the back wall.

Any of you physics experts (I know there are more than a couple here) can correct and edify.

I think one telling sign is how the tempered glass is shattered; it's clear that something hit it at a speed sufficient to implode it as we see, and not just "break" it.

I don’t know about 50mph, but definitely must have had a good head of steam.

I'd posit that could have been accomplished at 30mph if under steady acceleration.

But yes, he certainly could have been going much faster.

The OBD port may be able to give data referencing or allowing a reasonably accurate speed, I've no experience with that.

The 4Runner may be too old or just not the target vehicle for an EDR.

I know it won't look good to Apple but they need the concrete filled pipe barriers. Our Walgreens just installed them.

I think I recall seeing bollards in front of a lot of buildings on Brit TV shows.

Maybe it was some CG bitI in a sci-fi show, but there were bollards flush in the ground that rose up on some alerts.

There could be radar sensors on the roof that detect speed and direction and raise as a defensive measure.

Or make bollards that double as al fresco tables.

Or just stationary bollards with dome tops.

Police have been quiet as to the cause of the collision, and whether or not there are or will be charges filed.

Some more details about the crash from the driver's court appearance. Claims that his foot got stuck on the accelerator.

He stated that while driving in the area of Barnes and Noble, his right foot became stuck on the accelerator and the vehicle accelerated. He stated that he used his left foot to try to break but was unable to stop the vehicle and the crash through the front of the Apple store. He stated that he had no medical issues that would impair his ability to operate *** vehicle safely. He stated the vehicle had no mechanical issues to his knowledge and he denied consuming any alcohol or drugs that day. He agreed to take *** preliminary breath test, which registered *** reading of zero and he allowed investigators to search his cellular phone and he consented to *** voluntary blood draw. Investigators determined That *** 2019 Toyota four runner had crashed into the front of the Apple store and proceeded through the retail section before coming to its final resting point in the left rear corner of the Apple store. They noted that the entrance is approximately 30 ft from the travel lane of the parking lot. The front of the store consists of large windows and glass doors that extend to the base of the building and *** large gaping hole was observed through the glass window to the right of the main entrance. In the rear of the store, the forerunner came to rest against the rear wall, which just seems severe damage, causing it to collapse in spots and push into *** hallway behind the wall. Investigators interviewed witnesses and viewed surveillance video, which appeared to show the dark colored suv traveling at *** consistent high rate of speed down the traveling and directly into the Apple store, where it does feel that bail is ness necessary to ensure his appearance. I am gonna set bail in the amount of $100,000 cash based on all of those factors. I am going to order that he is not to operate *** motor vehicle while this case is pending.
