Got really lucky last night...

Clear night with no Moon and sky ablaze even here in the city:

Yes, this is a composite image and I got a decent exposure of Jupiter but not so great of the Galileans. Nevertheless, it's a good teaching image as all four are on one side of Jupiter and showing relative distances from the planet.

Lucky, lucky...

Nice. I used to have a roommate who had a big-ass telescope. He brought it once when we were pretty far out in the country and he got all excited about how good Jupiter looked. I looked through and all I saw was a blob of light. Your picture is much better than what I saw through his telescope.

What camera/telescope did you use?

Shot with the trusty SX60, believe it or not!

Cool. I recently got a used SX-540. Haven't used it yet for anything astronomical.

Handheld or on a tripod? Actually, a trapeze and... oh, you mean the camera!

Yes, tripod, but that exposure was f/6.3 @ 1/125sec using ISO 400 for the planet exposure and I used a frame shot at 1/30sec for bringing out the Moons in Camera Raw-used the RAW files of course....

The real question is which took longer to shoot...

Nice pics. I would not have thought the SX60 capable of getting the stripes or the moons.

30 years ago in an observational astronomy class, I wasn't getting shots that good of Jupiter and it's moons with an 8" Schmidt-Cassegrain and film camera...
That's a GREAT shot!

Not so long ago (when Saturn was at Opposition), I dragged out the 8" Schmidt-Cassegrain and of course took a peek at Jupiter as well.
This photo looks nearly the same as what I remember seeing through it with a 9mm eyepiece (2032mm f/l = ~225x).
I assume the photo is heavily cropped?

The real question is which took longer to shoot...

That old chestnut about, "used to do it all night, now it takes all night to do it"...

I would not have thought the SX60 capable of getting the stripes or the moons.

I took quite a few exposures, of course, just to get a couple good ones.

I assume the photo is heavily cropped?

Yes and I'm surprised at how well Jupiter looks after that much cropping. Sometimes the SX60 does impress me. Here's the uncropped frame. Sized for the forum tho:
