At least you only need one dose

Washington — U.S. health regulators on Tuesday approved the first gene therapy for hemophilia, a $3.5 million one-time treatment for the blood-clotting disorder. The Food and Drug Administration cleared Hemgenix, an IV treatment for adults with hemophilia B, the less common form of the genetic disorder which primarily affects men.

With the GoodRx coupon, it is only $12.56.

Given the lifetime costs of hemophilia, I think the insurance companies would be rather happy to pay a one-time lump sum...

Lol

I'm sure Aetna will be happy to pick this one up.

I think they would rather invest $3.5M and pay out a little each month (or whatever the time frame is). Then when the gene therapy comes down in price by several million they’ll reevaluate.

It may be a while before the price comes down, it is not like it has a large target group in the US or elsewhere. The rate of occurrence for hemophilia B is about 1 in 40,000, so about 8,000 people in all have it in the US. There is a subgroup who have a rare variant that only effects them as children, as adults bleeding and bruising is mostly over as an effect from the condition.

They absolutely will not be happy to do so. No insurance co wants to bear the entire cost at one go for a treatment which would ordinarily (under current therapies) be spread over years and probably multiple carriers. I imagine the manufacturer will be offering some guarantees in the form of hefty concessions for unsuccessful treatments.
