Photobook angst

Back in the day, I could whip out a simple photobook from iPhoto in no time. I still have them and they still look pretty good. Then Apple got out of the book business and I moved on to other companies but I haven’t done one in a while.

I just got back from a month in Sicily and I’d like to do a relatively simple book but I want to be able to choose the page layout and place the photos myself. From what I can tell both Google and Amazon want to do the placement for you. Am I missing something?

Also, I dropped pix from my Photos into Google photo book app, and I get hit with “these are low rez photos “ when I know the originals are 2.5 Mb or more. What’s going on there?

Any suggestions for different companies to try?

Thanks

I've been using Snapfish for a while. I am currently putting the finishing touches on a book from the Baltic. I want to finish by tomorrow midnight because there's a 70% off Cyber Monday sale going on through tomorrow. I usually do the books pretty quickly after we travel and just wait for a 70% off sale. They come around pretty often. The last book I did was a hardback 8 x 11 with 32 pages. The starting price was $52 plus $8 to ship. They discounted it by $38 so I was out the door at $23.48 with tax. You can either do one of their preset formats or do it yourself.

I whipped out a last-minute photo album for my fathers memorial service last summer using Walgreens.
They came out pretty well... I didn't spend a lot of time tinkering, but, I found it fairly easy.
