Do the migration assistant? New one does not have Firewire that I can find. Is there a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter that will work?

Old: iMac 27 inch late 2009 3.0 intel core duo. I have a stack of firewire drives I use for back up.

New to me: Apple 27-inch iMac (Retina 5K, Mid 2017)

Old has Sierra

New has High Sierra

To clarify in case it's not obvious, you can do the transfer from one Mac to another via WiFi.

USB-C TB to OG TB + OG TB to FW800 dongles may be an expensive fix, or a TB 3 dock w/ FW800 even more so......
but a $3 ethernet cable, as noted, is gonna be your best bet.

You should be able to connect an ethernet cable between the two and do the transfer that way. However, that 2009 might be too old for that to work.
