‘ Hertz will pay $168 million to customers it falsely accused of stealing its cars’

“ Many of the Hertz cases involved customers who had called to extend their rental agreement, but the extensions were not properly reflected in Hertz's computer systems. Other cases involved Hertz re-renting cars that had previously been reported as stolen without rescinding the police reports, causing unsuspecting customers to be pulled over by police. At other times, stolen cars were accidentally associated with the wrong customer, resulting in an arrest warrant for someone who was out of state entirely. “

It is just under $500k to each of the 364 affected customers

Next they can go after the EZ-Pass charges generated during a rental that included times when the car was parked in their lot and the keys were in their drop-box. And at the time of picking up the car it was reported to them that there was no EZ-Pass Transponder where it should have been.

Just in the past day i've been dealing with a $195 charge from Hertz on a credit card bill. the charge was on 11/4. The last Hertz rental I had was the third week in august.

The customer service rep looks it up and says the returning location reported there was a seat stain. I say unequivocally there was not a seat stain and if there was why wasn't I notified upon returning the car and in fact, I had not been notified about it at all. You can't just charge a credit card 3 months later.

I was very polite. The CSR understood why this was absurd. She said she needed to get a statement from the location and then she will correct the bill.

No refund as of today. I'll call tomorrow.

Sounds like a CSR telling you something plausible just to get rid of you. Good luck.

I hope it works out. I take 20 pics of a car, inside and out, when I pick it up and again when I drop it off. I keep those pics for a long time.

This is Hertz, 1 year might not be long enough. If they don't cancel the charge right away, I would suggest filing a complaint with your credit card.

Hmm. This happened to me at Alamo in San Diego about 10 years ago. SDPD contacted me by phone about a week later requesting that I come in for questioning. Luckily I had taken a photo of the employee checking the vehicle in as he said "Our system is down and I cannot give you a receipt." I later was updated that the employee was a part of a ring that stole about a half dozen cars that day.
