That's a bunch of baloney!

The price of bologna, that is.

For years, my goto sandwich snack as been bologna and cheese, mustard or occasionally mayonnaise, on white processed bread!

Yum.

Sometime ago, I realized that what I was buying was chicken beaks and pic snouts, and switched back to beef bologna.

YUM!

Tastes much better, and no slime, yay me!

A few months back, the 16oz packs were in short supply, and sometimes not available.

The 8oz packs were the same price/lb so, no problem, I got two of those.

Now, for the last two months, maybe a skosh more, there's been no beef bologna at all, just chicken and pork pretend stuff.

WHERE'S THE BEEF?!

So I go to AMZ since they sell fuds now and sure enough, there's what I want — $40.

Ok, but I don't need 25lbs. so I look for a smaller package— no joy.

I take a closer look at the $40 deal, thinking, ok, I'll freeze the bulk and thaw a pack at a time.

That $40 gets me two (2 qty) 16oz packs — $20 a freakin' pound.

$20 a freakin' pound — for beef bologna!

And it's Oscar Mayer, not Kobe, not even Waygu!

I'll hit Costco for some battered cod and chili, and maybe they'll have some beef bologna that I can afford without taking a loan.

Maybe.

Oy!

Do you have any good delis nearby? That would be your best bet. Plus, all those bologna-adjacent meats.

My wife, who otherwise exhibits good taste, is a baloney affectionardo. That may be an explanation of her attraction to me, that or her recall of child abuse at the hands of parents who regularly served her fried balogna.

The top slice with "Oscar Meyer" embossed on it was the best slice.

RAM,

It sounds like your purchasing packaged bologna. I second MrBigStuff's recommendation of checking out the deli and getting fresh sliced bologna. Stop & Shop, for example, has four different types of fresh-sliced bologna available. That's in addition to whatever you'll find in the packaged deli meat section, i.e. Oscar Meyer, Hebrew National, etc.

They heard about the use of mayo on bologna, and now they hide the stock or jack the price when you shop.

Yeah, prices on bologna have gone up from what I remember from just a couple years ago. There is still some cheap stuff under $5 a pound, but the better brands at my store's deli are now $7.50-$8 per pound on pork and beef bologna and $9 a pound for beef bologna.

The cheap stuff is "okay", but the store brand has a slightly sweet taste, and the other is Wunderbar.

OWC Jaimie,

Try Dietrichs. You won't regret it. I've never been disappointed by anything I've bought from them and have been a customer for decades. Literally, decades!

Illegal Mexican bologna? I hadn't heard of that before so looked it up. so basically a greater pork content, and illegal because not subject to the same inspection requirements for food to be sold in he US. Amazing what people will do for a taste of home from the reports on the amounts seized from smugglers.

Mortadella. When there's not quite enough fat in your bologna. ;)

Although it is tasty, as I recall.

Must be regional, we have beef bologna here. Like Braunschweiger, it makes for a nice change from ham on occasion.

16 oz. of Oscar Beef Baloney is up $7, that's more some of their lunch meat.

I can get Member's Mark Seasoned Angus Roast Beef, Sliced (22 oz.) at Sam's Club for $12.97 and it pretty darn good.

or Member's Mark Uncured Black Forest Ham, Sliced Deli Meat (22 oz.) for $8.23 but I like Baloney every now and then. Sam's doesn't even carry.

I also every couple months like to have a Potted Meat Sammich but even it's almost a $1/can at Food Lion, bought a six pack at Amazon for $0.71/can.

I quickly glanced at Walmart today, the Oscar Meyer Beef was $6.xx for a 16oz package, while the Oscar Meyer "regular mystery meat" was $2.xx for 16oz.

GGD, thank you, that works for me!

I appreciate all the other suggestions.

Bologna-adjacent have been weighed and measured but have been found wanting.

A deli might work, but truthfully, Oscar Mayer does hit the spot, so I'm not really up for taste testing gourmet brands.

And more truthfully, not being highly motivated, as much as I try to avoid Walmart, it's closer than any deli, if any are still in business, 2022 AC.

So once more into the Safeway, and if no joy, it's off to Walmart.
