Suggestions on Preparing and Priming rust Spots on Auto.

Was donated a 95 Jeep Cherokee Laredo. Its loosing its clear coat and being black, the whiteness of the flaky clear coat sticks out. That doesn't bother me, however. On the top, there are some rust spots. Since this may end up being a local driver for my grandson, I was wondering how I should treat rust areas on the roof before spraying some primer on that spot. The car is not a looker, and I am just changing oil and filters, and replacing serpentine belt and the broken hood release cable., etc.

So what, Sand Paper, and some sort of rust treatment, and then primer and make it look cool. Its just a travel from A to B type of car. And in todays market getting a moving vehicle for free is quite a bargain.

Thanks....

If you're just concerned about stopping the rust and not concerned about appearance...I've used a great product called 'Extend' to coat the rust. It bonds with the FeO2 to stop active spread of the rust. It creates a matte black appearance on the affected area. It's fairly durable, though not decorative.

I painted the underside of my 66 Corvair with Extend in 1990/91 and it's held up well. It's rather expensive for that use, but it did work well. For small spots, a single bottle is more than enough. On a decorative surface, maybe the aerosol version is a better option.

I’ve seen evapo-rust used to treat large areas of a car floor, frame but not a car exterior.

Instead of sanding, primer and paint, you may want to preserve the cars patina using a linseed oil mixture that is sprayed on the surface every 6 months.

I would go for Evaporust. You can get the liquid version for soaking parts or the gel version for clinging to larger parts.

They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Rust converter for the rusty areas.

You can then rattle-can it if you don't mind a black primer look.

All my vehicles are outside 24/7.

So when their clear coat lets go I just take that vehicle to the local MAACO and get the mid-grade option (urethane, not the base enamel) re-spray.

I've found the mid-grade lasts longer than the base enamel...with prep, around $1,000.
