I like to partition my Macs so one volume is on the Original OS, and the 2nd volume is the updated OS.

My MacBook came with macOS12.
Should I partition or make a new volume, so I can have two boot OS avaiable.

Carbon Copy Cloner is telling me to make a partition .

1. Don't do it. Best to use an external drive for your second boot vol vs partitioning the internal drive on a new Mac.

2. Yes, you'd need to make a new partition for this purpose.

Apple has gotten really sloppy about documenting the boot vols and processes on modern Macs and it's very easy for something to get hosed, if not immediately then on a future OS update/upgrade.

You'll note that CCC defaults to only copying the data vol from a drive now. It's because copying the whole architecture including the locked system-volume is messed up. Bombich took months to work out a way to do it that Apple didn't break and still calls it a "best effort" job. It uses Apple's clunky APFS replicator which is (at best) a work-in-progress.

Call it "sideways." There are new tricks for APFS volumes and multiple user-spaces and virtualization. Apple giveth and Apple lets rot for a few years and then taketh away.

Are you thinking of Carbon Copy Cloner? Wouldn't credit Apple with the speed benefits of CCC v6.
