Problems Firing Up My 9600

My NYD tradition is to get my 9600 out of storage and fire it up.

I have missed this for a couple years.

Unit is here, is connected to all required devices. It fires up but just static on the screen. I think I recognize the OS loading (OS9) but the screen is just static.

Monitor does work, tested.

Suggestions welcome.

Pure static is usually the screensaver for a display that's not receiving a signal. It's not coming from the Mac.

Std troubleshooting:

Re-seat the cable for the display, at both ends.

Zap PRAM.

With power-off, detach the display-cable, re-seat the display card (consider moving to another PCI slot), then reconnect everything ... and zap PRAM again for good-measure.

Further item to check, the battery. A low or dead logic board battery can keep some of the older Macs from booting or displaying properly. On some just removing the battery will allow a boot, but with just the default PRAM settings. On other model Macs you may need to replace the battery with a good one. I forget which category the 9600 falls in.

A 9600 will (ordinarily) either not start up at all or will start to boot and then shut down if the battery is dead.

But it doesn't hurt to replace the battery if all else fails.

3.6 V lithium 1/2 AA.

I currently have it running!

I currently have it on the Internet!

Internet Explorer 5 will not deal with any https:// servers like our beloved macresource.

This makes me quite happy; that it still runs. Found a bunch of old pics from when my kids were little. I wish I knew how to get them off of the 9600. It has a floppy drive and a CD drive. I thought I put a USB card in it but not sure.

It has a TV tuner card in it. I do not remember ever using it.

I've seen that cause bad video a few times.

My LC wouldn't boot at all, but a friends G4 iMac would, but with distorted video.

Replacing the PRAM battery fixed those and a couple of others.

You should be able to connect to it via ethernet.

Tried via multiple OSX computers but no dice. One says that the 9600 is not supported. So it must see it.

Might be old enough to need some kind of special cable--I vaguely remember something about directional ethernet cable or some such.

Apple changed how AppleTalk worked some over the years, and finally removed it with OS X 10.6. So if you have an older OS X system the 9600 should be able to connect with that over ethernet. It has been too long since OS 9, I forget if there were other networking protocols available that you could enable.

I no longer have an FTP server to FTP to. I'll ping Clay to see if I can rent one.

What's I'd really like to do is put a USB PCI card in it. I have a bunch of older USB thumb drives and one that is still powered from the wall.

Download a FTP server app from the App Store on your modern Mac.

I've used this one ($5 bucks) for an old scanner:
[apps.apple.com]

Install Fetch 4 on your old Mac.

Nice. The 8500 had a Ethernet connection so I'm sure the 9600 does as well.
