.....1899‘s ship is sunk: Netflix has cancelled the mysterious drama

“With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed,” co-showrunners Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, who also were behind Netflix’s Dark, posted Monday on Odar’s Instagram account. “We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned.”

They continued: “That’s life. We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you were a part of this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget.”

The multilingual, sci-fi mystery series started streaming in November 2022. It was set in the titular year and took place on the steamship Cerberus as it crossed the Atlantic. During the passage, the Cerberus came upon another ship that had completely disappeared months earlier. Very weird, seemingly inexplicable phenomena began to happen soon after. Without spoiling anything, Season 1 ends on a wild cliffhanger that had the potential to radically reset the show for a potential — and now, not happening — Season 2.

I can see why.

The characters weren't engaging and the story felt "forced."

I had a hard time getting into it.

With the streaming services and Netflix in particular, I don't start watching until season three is released. I've had the rug pulled on me with a few decent series.

I kept waiting for tie in, is the Captain Jonas in yet another alternate reality?

Thankfully no.

Nothing about this series seemed interesting to me, so I passed.

Seems like I didn't miss anything.

The technical details of how they produced the show are very interesting, but I had yet to start watching it.

Thankfully no.

That's where opinions can differ. I tried to get into Dark based on all of the reviews from people who watched it, but it just never clicked with me. However 1899 while having its faults held together enough to keep me watching. My opinion might change when I finish watching the last couple episodes, but I at least plan to watch them. Dark stayed on that "maybe I will go back" list and still haven't. Main reason I haven't finished 1899 is that I have other series on my lists that I go to first and watch an episode of 1899 about once or twice a week.

We watched it and were drawn in enough, but HATED the way it concluded. I wanted closure.

I got two episodes into 1899 and wasn't terribly hooked. Haven't tried Dark but as with others, have heard good things.

Very slow build up, interesting setup. Dark & nightmareish at times.

Not everyone's cup of tea, but I very much liked it.

Everyone's tastes are different. Having watched the entirety of both series, I'll stand by MY view. Doesn't mean the same rings true for anyone else. I do feel that even if you never got into Dark, had you watched the whole thing I doubt 1899 would have held up as much for you. 1899 didn't completely suck, I watched the whole thing, just obvious it's derivative and not as well done.
