Star Wars Mailbox in Baltimore

I saw the photo posted earlier this month on MR, but this weekend I saw one in person at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore. I still think it's a rather strange idea.

I have a very bad camera in my cellphone, BTW. I think of it as the Lomo of cellphone cameras.

USPS is going whole hog w/ it's Star Wars deal. I was picking up my mail yesterday and the guy in front of me was begging the clerk to put a couple SW sheets away for him. I never really understood the whole SW worship thing...and I grew up in that era. Cool movie and all...but 30 years later for grown men to drool over and beg for SW stamps. I just don't know. Anyway the clerk said USPS is printing more SW stamps than Elvis, the previous all-time best seller.

The stamps, BTW, are not available until May 25. And there's no need to rush to get them or ask a clerk to reserve them; they'll be plentiful.

Wow, having those hi-res images is like they are asking people to counterfeit the stamps.

Counterfeiters may be able to reproduce the image of a stamp, but they're always tripped up by the lack of taggant. Taggant is a phosphorescent or fluorescent material added to the stamp, either in the paper or in the ink. When a tagged stamp passes under the optical reader in an automated mail sorter, the equipment "sees" the tagging and signals the machine to turn the envelope in the correct direction and then to cancel the stamp. Untagged stamps are kicked out by machine, thus alerting a human to a potential problem with the stamp.

I saw a mailbox in Union Station (Wash, DC) this past weekend.

I thought they were an urban legend before that winking smiley
