One of my son's friends passed away. 15

OD. Sounds like he took a percocette that was laced with fentenal. His parents found him dead in his bed when they woke him up for school.

The parents, the school, the church and the police are doing all they can to find out if any other kids have the pills.

He was a bit of a lovable goofball. I remember when he was here at the house he'd call his dad to check in every few hours and he would tell his dad he loved him every time. Multiple times a day.

He and my son went to school together in a very small parochial school 1st grade to 8th.

About 18 months ago my son told me the boy was smoking pot. I told his dad. They sent him to treatment and as far as I know he stayed clean. My son hung out with him a few times and said there was no mention of any drugs.

Only child. He started getting high when his parents were on the verge of splitting up. They stayed together.

Wow that’s tragic and sad. Sorry for your sons loss. This fentanyl lacing is really despicable. I hope they catch whoever is responsible.

I can't imagine. This world seems so much more dangerous than it used to be. Maybe it's just where I live.

I think that it's everywhere. And involves every background and demographic. Can't tell you how many people I know that are dealing with some level of addiction.

>They sent him to treatment and as far as I know he stayed clean. My son hung out with him a few times and said there was no mention of any drugs.

Percocet is easier to hide than weed.

There's considerable overlap between youthful exploration and early signs of mental illness. Honestly, mistaking exploration for addiction is just going make things worse. Its better to measure engagement in school and other aspects of life to determine well being. Perhaps he did clean up after rehab. Or maybe he just got better at hiding it. For all we know this is the only pill he's taken. In my experience, for the large majority its exploration but a few will sink into life long mental illness. Its silly to blame the substances....unless they take a life. Hm, maybe there are cases where substance abuse is the central problem and I just haven't been witness to it.

This is the sort of risk that teenagers are likely misjudge - the low probability of something going severely wrong.

I wish we could just get rid of fentenal. I'm sorry for your loss.

That's terrible. So sorry for your son's loss. Try to help him through this the best you can. Our son still can't talk about the loss of his brother but refuses any help. He still has a sealed video game in the glove box of his car that his brother bought a couple days before he went to the hospital, no one is allowed to mess with that game.

This is horrific.

How's your son faring?

It's very good that your son can talk to you.

A lot of parents don't have that.

Very sorry to hear this tragic news.

This is a big problem among young people today. No easy way to stop it - things will probably get worse before they get better.

I'm genuinely sorry.

We would usually lose a couple of kids every year at the school, it was never easy. One observation I have made is that kids are pretty resilient. They take the loss hard but then quickly move on.

Extremely saddened (and scared) to hear this

We just had a talk with our 2 sons a few weeks ago about the dangers of fentanyl-lacing

It was for this very reason that I got 2 doses of Narcan to keep at home 'just in case'

It's a nasal spray and super easy to administer

I don't know how it works in other countries, but in the US every state has different rules but you should be able to get Narcan relatively easy and without a script, though pharmacists are apparently uninformed that they can dispense without a script

Find your state for details

For anyone in Texas, the UT Health Science Center San Antonio Nursing Department handles requests for the entire state through the website (and subsequent links) I linked above

It was easy as filling out the online form and then waiting...my confirmation email said it could take up to 45 days to receive it, but I believe my package came in 2 weeks or so

If you've got kids, especially teenagers, don't think twice - just get some Narcan

Very sad, sorry to hear.

Several years ago, I started to notice how many people were self medicating in one form or another.

yes, thank you so much for this PSA. I will look into it now, although I'm pretty hooked in to the parental systems where I live and I've not heard of such availability.

chopper, my heartfelt condolences to you and your son. I simply cannot imagine what this is like, although my cousin lost her child to an od at 17. so, I've got some perspective how it impacts the family (it tore her mother's and grandmother's hearts out and they never recovered). but, from what I have read, the death happens so fast that it's often impossible to be in a position to assist unless you discover the OD immediately.

OMG how horrible.... I'm so sorry for your son's loss and the trauma he and your family is experiencing. Hopefully the SOB that sold him this pill will get caught and go away for murder.

Teach your children well, and love them as much as they can handle.

I think good. I asked him last night what he was feeling and he said he was just really angry because it was a stupid way to die.

My son and his mom are semi devout Christians. I think when they suffer a loss like this their spirituality helps them in ways that a non-believer like me does not understand.

Fentanyl is essential to pain management in hospitals. When it gets mixed with other drugs by dealers it is of course very dangerous, but so is the other stuff they sell.

There is way too much hysteria/copaganda about fentanyl these days from dubious sources like cops who claim to have passed out from skin contact (i.e., know they won’t pass a urine test at work and make something up), or that you can absorb it by handling money, or that it is being marketed to kids as candy.

Terrible loss for that family. At that age, we think nothing bad will happen to us.

That is great info. My kids are older, but I play music in bars, so it may actually be good to have it around. It should probably be even more available, since it can hardly be misused.

It’s a very good idea to have Narcan around regardless of whether there is fentanyl exposure.

NYC is has placed some PSAs in bus shelters aimed at casual or addicted users, stressing that they should never be alone when using and that there needs to be Narcan available.
