Rice, rice, baby.... What's the Phorum's fave rice cooker ?

El cheapo gizmo in our household is burning rice, and needs to be replaced. What does the phorum like for rice, brown rice, (but not pasta, I stand a stir like Grandma taught me) ?

Zojirushi is my favorite. After unsatisfying rice at a relatives house I did my research. It’s expensive but works great.

Ukulele music I couldn't find anywhere else.

This! I was lucky enough to buy one on craigslist for cheap and over 10 years later its still going. If it died I'd replace it with a new one.

I'm on team Tiger for rice cookers. No bells and whistles. One button. It does one thing. Cook rice REALLY well. Made in Japan.

What do people like for a small rice cooker? Smallest I see looking at these Zojirushi and Tiger brand ones is 5.5 cup, I would be just cooking a cup or two at a time as it is only for myself.

Has anyone tried cooking wheat berries and rice together in a rice cooker? I used to start cooking a cup of wheat berries on the stove for about thirty minutes and then add another cup of rice (with additional water) to let them cook together for another 20-30 minutes. The result would be a mixture that lasted the week.

Never tried with a rice cooker. Good results might be enough to sway a purchase.

thanks, Todd's chewy keyboard

Tiger has a 3-cup model. In fact, it's the model I have. I cook 1-cup of rice in it all the time. The inner side of the pot liner has embossed markings for 1, 2 and 3-cup water levels to make it foolproof.

One of the fuzzy logic ones. Mine's a Zojirushi and it's great, makes delicious rice of all types (but I normally use brown rice).

For JoeH, there are "mini" versions (like 3 or 3.5 cup sizes) available. I can cook just one cup of raw rice in my 5.5-cup Zoji, but usually make more to freeze for quick meals later (since brown rice takes longer to cook).

Have to say my Instant Pot does a decent job with rice. Though perhaps not quite as good as the Zoji, it is a more versatile device which cooks faster. When cooking for myself, the 3-quart Instant Pot gets a lot of use.

Our rice cooker works pretty well aside from the expected spatter coming from the vent hole, but I've taken to using the Instant Pot to make rice.

In particular cooking brown rice is faster and more consistent.

I also like that it directly cooks dry beans fast and well without needing the overnight soaking.

Zojirushi and Tiger as mentioned, as well as Panasonic whose rice cookers used to be under the National name until the rebrand. The Panasonic cookers aren't made in Japan anymore but somewhere in SE Asia I think, so they're cheaper. I have a very old Hitachi basic rice cooker which I don't think are made now but it's been great. Sometimes I just use a sauce pan.

That Zojirushi cooler is gourmand level pricing, and I'm not one.

I'm leery of small Panasonic appliances, since my experience with one of their toaster ovens.

tven rhe smallest Tiger seems a little more than I need.

Now this...

...seems like just my speed.

$24

The only question is reliability.

Zojirushi manual rice cooker
Amazon $59
Had one for years. I don't need 'fuzzy logic'. My brain is fuzzy enough. I don't cook rice in advance and have to keep it warm. Rinse well, cook, eat.

It looks like one company in China is make these, and branding them to anybody who pays.

I've seem some now that look exactly alike, and the $59 Z model looks very similar to a bunch of other.

I don't think a dedicated rice cooker appliance needs to be any more complicated than the common old design.

It doesn't need circuit boards, logic circuits, or any electronic components that don't survive well when subjected to moisture or heat.

The old simple design tells when the liquid water is gone simply by measuring the temperature with the clever thermometer integrated into the power switch.
